First Marking Period (Sept 5th - Nov 8th)
In this edition:
Throughout the 1st Marking Period, all students in Library Specials learned the routines and guidelines of responsible library citizenship. One of the biggest responsibilities is remembering to bring your library books on Library Special day! Families, please assist your student by establishing routines such as having a designated spot to keep library books at home and checking the calendar to make sure library books are in your student's backpack on Library Special day each week. And don't forget to read library books with your student or ask them which books they chose to borrow each week!
Students in grades K-2 enjoyed weekly ASL read-alouds of picture books such as Pete the Cat Checks out the Library by James Dean, Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, I Spy Under the Sea by Edward Gibbs, I Need My Monster! by Amanda Noll, Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, A Beasty Story by Bill Martin, Jr., and Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell.
Students in grades 3-8 enjoyed weekly ASL read-alouds and book talks. We discussed Deaf Awareness Month, and some of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders came with me to the Newark Free Library to do an evening community session about ASL Poetry on Sept 26th!
Students in our ELP 3-5 year-old classes attend Story Time in the LINK Center every Friday. During the first marking period we read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins, Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, and Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson.
The LINK Center has a wonderful website where our patrons can access learning resources, search for titles to borrow, place holds, see newly added books, browse featured titles, and access special collections created for various purposes such as research projects or special events.
In September/October, the featured titles and special collections were dedicated to Deaf Awareness Month (September), the International Week of the Deaf (last full week in September), Banned Books Week (Oct 1-7, 2023), and National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15-Oct 15).

During September-October, Karen hosts sessions in the LINK with the Middle and High School Language Arts students and staff. During these sessions Karen gives a "tour" of the LINK's Destiny website, teaching mini-lessons on searching for titles, placing holds, keeping tabs on their current check-outs, and using the Learning Resources on the site. Karen also gives mini-lessons on using Sora - the student reading app provided by DE DOE with a library of thousands of e-books and other content. You can read more about Sora's partnership with the State of Delaware here.
