What is the National Junior Honor Society?
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a prestigious membership organization dedicated to recognizing and developing the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship that define and sustain a democratic society.
Established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1929, thriving chapters can be found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories and Canada.
Why NJHS Matters
The National Junior Honor Society and its sister organization, the National Honor Society (Grades 11-12), recognize students’ achievements in class and in the community and encourage young people to continue to do their best in these areas. Membership in the Honor Society provides a support system where children can develop friends with similar goals while having fun and developing assets that will help them stand out in the competitive college admissions process.
Selection of Students
Selection to NJHS is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership. After receiving a candidate packet, they must provide the information requested by the published deadline. Membership is not automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specific level of academic performance. Leadership, service, citizenship and character must also be in evidence as determined by the Information Form submitted to the Faculty Council.
