On Oct. 29, 2025, Chinook School Division Industry Education Program, in partnership with the Swift Current Research and Development Centre and Great Plains College, hosted 50 students in grades 10 - 12 in the second Explore Careers in Agriculture and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Event. The event took place at Great Plains College and the Swift Current Research and Development Centre. Students from Maverick, SCCHS, Vanguard, Cabri, Ponteix, Eastend and Consul enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the various related educational opportunities available at GPC, while also being able to meet with local industry representatives. In addition, students spent the afternoon out at the SCRDC, providing them with the opportunity to learn more about the cutting-edge research happening right here in Swift Current and how the work supports farmers, strengthens the agriculture industry, while helping to bring safe, healthy food to the table. Eight interactive stations were explored: Chemical Lab; Phosphorus / PH Lab; Soils Lab; Wheat and Crop Production Services; Livestock and Barns; Machines and Mechanics Shop; Salt Lab; and the Greenhouse.

From April 2, 2025
Approximately 50 students from schools across Chinook School Division attended the Explore Careers in Health Care Event on April 2, 2025, at Great Plains College Campus in Swift Current. Participants had the opportunity to participate in interactive hands-on learning situations in multiple health care fields. Students rotated through Pharmacy, Lab, Acute Care Nursing, Long Term Care Nursing, Nutrition and Food Services, Continuing Care Aid, Environmental Services, Volunteer Services, and EMS presentations.

We would also like to thank Mackenzie Veason and Sidney Gruetzner of Great Plains College for so generously hosting us. Participant comment: "I learned that the Sask Health Authorities is like one big team. Their jobs are very connected to each other and rely on each other so much. Every job has a purpose. Healthcare has so many benefits and jobs available for anyone who wants to work in the field."

Fourteen students from SCCHS and Maverick High School attended the Explore Careers in Early Learning Event on November 22, 2024 at Natural Wonders Early Learning Centres - Elmwood Main and Elmwood Centre locations in Swift Current. Participants had the opportunity to work with children in the various age groups. Thank you to Sheila Paridis, Executive Director from NWELC, Team Coordinators Korbyn Heinrichs and Marie Jo Javier, and the various staff for facilitating this day for our students. We would also like to thank Mackenzie Veason and Shannon Mitchel of Great Plains College for sharing the various post-secondary learning opportunities in Early Childhood Education that are available to students. Participants comments: “I want to be a part of making a difference in the lives of children.” “I learned how important brain development is in the first five years of a child’s life.” “I was surprised how fast children connect with you.” “I love the feeling you get when you work with a child and can see you are making a difference.”

Students from SCCHS attended the Explore Careers in Early Learning Event on May 28 at Natural Wonders Early Learning Centers - Cheadle Place location in Swift Current. Participants had the opportunity to work with children in the various age groups. Thank you to Team Coordinator Jenna Watson and her staff for facilitating this day for our students. We would also like to thank Keely Chalk and Shannon Mitchel of Great Plains College for sharing the various post-secondary learning opportunities in Early Childhood Education that are available to students. The Chinook School Division Industry Education Program organized an opportunity for students in Grades 9-12 to explore the SaskPower - Chinook Power Station. Students interested in pursuing careers with SaskPower participated in the tour and experience. They learned about various careers from those in the sector including Electrical Engineering Technologists, Power Engineering, Power Line Technicians, and more. Students and teachers went through a safety orientation, toured the facility, and learned about training opportunities through Great Plains College, and the SDLC.

The Chinook SD Industry Education Program organized an opportunity for 23 students in Grades 9-12 to explore potential careers in Agriculture Science. Participants had the chance to delve into interactive learning experiences encompassing plant science, pesticide application, herbicide management, tillage, marketing, and soil science. The eight-month Agricultural Science Certificate program, hosted by Great Plains College, was highlighted as a path to kickstart a career in the agriculture sector. Students were invited to the college for a firsthand look at the program's offerings and to engage in hands-on agricultural activities. Following lunch, the group embarked on a tour of the Swift Current Research and Development Station, gaining insights into job opportunities and the roles of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada staff in various agricultural research areas.

The Chinook School Division Industry Education Program organized an opportunity for students in Grades 9-12 to explore SWT Gull Lake. Students interested in pursuing a career in agronomy participated in the Agronomy Academy. They learned about various careers from those in the sector including Agronomist, Human Resources, Grain Marketing, Sales, and more. Students and teachers were able to tour the facility, and local growing plots.
