Senior Kindergarten
In the kindergarten class we will be using Whole Body Listening as our classroom management strategy. This is to ensure a positive classroom community. Whole Body Listening is a holistic listening approach that integrates all body senses.
Eyes watching
Hands Empty
Body Still
Ears Listening
Mouth Quiet
We will also use positive reinforcement in all scenarios in our classroom, reminding our friends to make good choices, always be kind, and respect one another. We want to instill the teachings of our Seven Grandfathers as well as the Medicine Wheel. We also use our language, Anishnaabemowin, to help our friends in the classroom.
Social Emotional Learning
The Zones of Regulation provides an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sorts emotions, all of which are expected in life, into four colored zones. Students are allowed to feel how they want to feel and we encourage and embrace all emotions. Students do a 'check in' throughout the day to let eachother know what zone they are in and how they are feeling. We are working on ways to work through our emotions as well.
Students are learning about magnitude and one to one correspondence.
We use a video to assist in building our subitizing skills. With subitizing, students need to instantly recognize the number they see whether in dots, using tally marks, using pictures, or fingers. Students need to think quick and say the number they see before the next number comes up.
