Wang Lao Shi (王老師) Spotlight
Wang Lao Shi is the founder of Chiao Hsin Chinese Language School. The reason Wang Lao Shi opened Chiao Hsin is because when she became a mother, she had a dream of opening a school so that her child and other children in the community can learn the Chinese language and the value of Chinese culture in the United States. After conferring with her mentor, Sun Lao Shi, or Dr. Sun, a professor at California State University, she was then even more encouraged and inspired to open Chiao Hsin. From a mother’s simple hope for her son, she established Chiao Hsin Chinese Language School in 1990 which is still going strong today in its 33rd year.
Wang Lao Shi never knew Chiao Hsin would grow to be so big. At its start, there were 18 students but in 2019, Chiao Hsin grew to its biggest at 200 students. When the pandemic occurred, the school was restructured to a healthy 100 students. Her favorite thing about Chiao Hsin is seeing students improve. For example, the students that didn’t want to learn Chinese at first eventually say that they love and appreciate learning Chinese. Something that has always been a challenge for her when it came to running the school is balancing tuition and cost. To overcome her challenges, she would pray because of her faith as a Christian. Wang Lao Shi uses her heart from her love from heaven and it tells her what path to follow. She hopes the students of Chiao Hsin will always be safe and protected.

From a mother’s simple hope for her son, she established Chiao Hsin Chinese Language School in 1990 which is still going strong today in its 33rd year.
2010 was a great year for Chiao Hsin because one of the best staff members, also known as Ms. Bunny, joined our school. Ms. Bunny assisted with everything from planning many of the activities and events to helping Chiao Hsin through tough times. She's been a tremendous help to Chiao Hsin ever since 2010 when she joined as a tutor and would come to play a bigger role at the school for the years to come.
Ms. Bunny has always worked with kids. From babysitting, giving private music lessons, and volunteering at children’s centers to tutoring and teaching ESL students, she had always enjoyed her work with kids. She worked many jobs, but it wasn’t until a friend introduced her to Chiao Hsin that she got the opportunity to work with all the wonderful students here and became the Education Program Director.
She accomplished many things while at Chiao Hsin such as the Christmas Performances, fundraiser events, planning the summer program, and supporting the staff. Ms. Bunny says that she has great memories of Chiao Hsin, such as going camping, having sleepovers, and doing karaoke with the kids but her favorite memory was teaching online. When the pandemic occurred in 2020, Chiao Hsin quickly reorganized to continue to provide classes online. Despite the difficulties of transitioning to online teaching, Ms. Bunny thoroughly enjoyed being another form of support for the kids and used her creativity to interact and make content for students.
After more than 10 years at Chiao Hsin, Ms. Bunny says she will always be grateful for the opportunity and experiences she has had with everyone here. As the years passed, her aspiration and philosophy when it came to working with kids became more and more clear. Ms. Bunny hopes to dedicate her life to working with kids to impart both knowledge and wisdom to children through creative learning and most importantly, help students grow up with a healthy sense of self.
