One of the many games they played was about the Chinese Zodiac where students had to place cards on a board in the order of the twelve zodiac animals. The winners got to pick a red envelope as a prize. Red envelopes are for good wishes and luck for the new year ahead. The Chinese New Year is about getting rid of bad and old spirits and welcoming new spirits.
We teach students this to show them how this tradition started. For example, the Nian is a Chinese legend that started in the early 20th century in China. It was said that this monster would come every year and terrorize the village for food. The Nian would hide under the sea or in the mountains until the end of Chinese New Year when it would come out to look for food and people to prey on. It was said that lions scared off the Nian. For the villagers to scare off the Nian, people would wear red because the monster hated bright colors, especially the color red. The villagers would also set off firecrackers because the Nian is vulnerable to loud sounds. These are one of the many cultural beliefs in China.
