What You Need to Know

Helpful Habits and Routines

• For math, students need immediate feedback on whether or not they are doing problems correctly.  Each assignment needs to be checked by parents, and students need to rework problems they miss.  

•  Students also need their parents help to manage the papers involved in the math class.  Homework to be turned in will be placed in a folder and turned in during class.  Completed work will be turned back in a folder, so multiple folders are required. There is no textbook - all the homework is handed out at the beginning of the unit.  I will guide the students in placing the papers in their binders at the beginning of a unit, but they may need help correctly filing returned papers and removing completed papers at the end of a unit to keep their binders from becoming overwhelming.  

• If you have a problem you were unable to figure out, email me so I can plan to go over it in class.

• If you know your student struggles with their math facts, providing extra practice at home will also be helpful.

Productive Independent Learning

• Spreading the homework out over the days in between classes so they have the chance to learn, sleep on what they have learned, and practice it again.

• Watching the available videos, even if they are not assigned, to reinforce the concepts.  

• When completing homework assignments, show the work for the problems.

How to Help Your Student at Home

• Review the videos for the lesson.  If that doesn't help, take a break and come back when rested, hydrated, and fed.  

• Ask the student to talk about what they do know from the assignment and see if they can apply that idea to the problem they are stuck on.  Have them send me an email with the assignment, problem number, and problem they are having. 

•  Parents can also reach out to me, but I want the students to know how to ask for help.

Critical: High involvement throughout the year for grading the homework and having the students rework missed problems This needs to be done daily/for each assignment.  

High parent involvement is initially necessary to be sure the student gets into the routine of turning in their homework in a timely manner.

Watch the videos that will be in Google Classroom.  Reach out to me if you have questions about how material is presented.  Speak positively about learning from mistakes, having a growth mindset, learning something together.  Remind them they can do hard things. Some approaches to the material may be different than how parents learned it.  Address concerns about that to me, but be encouraging to your students.

Classroom Connections

During class we will take notes, practice problems, and work on application.  Sometimes homework will be problems to further practice what we have learned.  Sometimes homework will involve watching videos and working problems before the content has been taught in class.  There will also be digital assignments to complete and turn in.
