Around the middle of February, the Cheshire High School performed three shows of their pop concert and senior showcase at Nelson Hall in Elim Park. The full choir performed six different pop songs together, however, we also had twenty of our seniors choose their own songs and perform solos as well. For the full choir, they practiced in their classes, from the middle of December until the concert, really working on making sure each of the six songs was ready to be performed. However, some seniors shared the experience of learning their solos for these big performances.

The seniors said that once they picked their songs, they were pulled one by one in the last fifteen to twenty minutes of their classes to learn their song with Mr. Bell. He would work with all of them on specific parts of their music making sure that come February, they would perform it as best as possible. However, senior Ella Paul, mentioned, “To learn my solo, I listened to it a lot…” and continued later saying that even though that helped her, “The most important steps of preparation were practicing with Mr. Bell because it is very different to sing along with a track than with a live piano playing behind you.” By taking these steps, these seniors were able to take the steps to their amazing performances.

Furthermore, as these seniors finished their final pop concert, they described the meaning behind their performances. Madelyn Bailey commented, “It was bittersweet. I loved getting to see the people I’m graduating with perform and have fun, even though it was sad in the sense that I’ll never perform in another Pops Concert again.” Still, the seniors noted that it was amazing to be able to sing with their friends and that it was a great experience and memory for all of them.

They also reflected on their past experiences with the choir, and one of the seniors said, “I have had a very positive experience in chorus! I really enjoy singing but mostly I like how it’s a place where all of us feel comfortable and can support each other in and outside of class.” Additionally, senior Abigail Harkins, commented, “Chorus is amazing. I have learned so much, not only about music, but other “life” things as well. I’ve also made really amazing friends and met cool people by being in the choir.”

Overall, the pop concert was an amazing experience for everyone in the Cheshire High School choir, but for the seniors, it was a part of their bittersweet conclusion to high school. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the pop concert, and an extra special congratulations to the graduating seniors and senior soloists!
