March 2nd through March 7th is Read Across America week, a national week dedicated to spreading love for literature all over the country. It was originally created in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. Several schools and organizations have been celebrating here in Connecticut, but Cheshire High School’s National English Honor Society had a special way to spread their own love for English. On March 4th, National English Honor Society members and other literature-loving students took a trip to Highland Elementary School to share their favorite Dr. Seuss books with the younger students.

The elementary school students loved the experience, but the joy of spreading reading to others made the trip just as beneficial for NEHS members.“Being able to share the magic and silliness of Dr. Suess with young, developing minds was such a meaningful experience,” says Julianna Distante, 2021. “It truly was a rewarding feeling to go back to such a nostalgic part of your lives and be able to reflect a positive role model,” adds Logan Wolff, 2021. Spreading the message of National English Honor Society is a key part to the club, and this visit allowed students to do just that.

However, NEHS members do not have to be the only ones who celebrate Read Across America week this year! If you, too, want to participate in the festivities, here are five of the Rampage's favorite books to get you started!

  1. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (recommended by...me!)

  2. The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd (recommended by Callie Fritz, Health Editor, 2020)
