With states enacting a second round of lockdowns due to a holiday-induced surge of Coronavirus cases, it’s getting harder to get out and do new and exciting things safely. Recently, the idea of local tourism and being a tourist in your state reemerged as a fun new way to get out! If you’re bored of staying home and feel like you need to get out, here are three different local Connecticut spots to safely explore this holiday season!

1.) Hubbard Park Christmas light drive through

Every year, the Hubbard Park grounds are transformed into a winter wonderland by tons of different light displays. Enjoy the winter ambiance of the lights from the comfort of your vehicle by driving throughout the park! The light show is free, but there tends to always be a line of cars at night during the holiday season. However, it’s well worth the stop-and-go traffic present every night during the holiday season. I recommend grabbing a friend or family member and heading out with a cup of hot chocolate to enjoy the lights!

2.) Magic of Lights at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre

The Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford is hosting the Magic of Lights show until January 2 this year. The drive-through light show has been touring different states for the last 30 years and this is their first time in Connecticut. It’s a mile-long drive-through light display with a “Santa’s Workshop” venue at the end where families can take socially distanced photos with Santa and shop for gifts. Tickets are sold in advance for $25 and the event runs from 5-10 pm every night!

3.) Olde Mistick Village

If you’re looking to get some last-minute holiday shopping in or just go for a festive stroll, Olde Mistick Village is for you! This collection of different small businesses and shops is located in downtown Mystic next to the Aquarium. You can find a variety of fun shops from a Swedish specialty gift shop to a fishing gear store. There’s something for everyone! The village also hosts an array great restaurants and unique candy shops. If shopping isn't your thing, you can stroll around and look at the gorgeous Christmas light displays that the different shops put up around the village as well as their iconic massive Christmas trees!
