Cheshire High School offers a variety of traditional sports like football, baseball, soccer, golf, swimming and many more that have been around for years. But, a new activity may be added to this list in the coming weeks: e-Sports.

The survival of e-Sports at CHS would hardly be a surprise. This idea had already been in the works for almost two years. It took time to develop. Connecticut already has a large high school e-Sports scene, being the first, and one of the largest, statewide leagues in the US. A team from CHS would just add to the already large group of schools sponsoring students to compete on a statewide, and sometimes national, level. The league in Connecticut is partnered with a company called PlayVS, which helps organize the league. They currently offer competition in 3 games: League of Legends, SMITE, and Rocket League.

The process, like in many high schools, was actually initiated by students. Vishesh Kumar (Class of 2020) and Peter Feng (Class of 2020) met with the advisor for the schools gaming club, Dr. Cadugan to discuss the possibility of bringing e-Sports to the school. The process began after midterms last year. Thanks to the success of Peter’s fund raising Super Smash Brothers tournament, the school has agreed to allow students to compete under the CHS Rams in League of Legends, SMITE and Rocket League.
