On Friday, September 23rd, the Cheshire High School Football team traveled to West Hartford where they trounced Conard High School by a score of 34-7. With this win the Rams have improved to a record 3-0 to start the year, beating Hillhouse last week and New Milford the week prior. This was also the Rams' second straight road victory.

“High School football is dominated by physical people, so having a lot of physical people helps to set the tone.” said Senior Micah Galloza when being asked about what has led to the team's success this season.

The Rams have found tremendous success on the defensive side of the ball this season, allowing just two touchdowns over the course of 3 games. They have also only allowed 504 total yards during this stretch. Making 163 tackles, grabbing five interceptions as well as having four sacks, the Rams' defense has been dominant.

Leading the charge on the defensive side of the ball have been Juniors Jack Brewster and Evan Russo. Brewster has 19 tackles on the season as well as 8 solo tackles. Russo leads the team with 2 sacks while also having 8 solo tackles.

The Rams rushing attack has proved essential in their offense. Of their 833 offensive yards, 703 have been on the ground. And of their 12 offensive touchdowns, 9 have come from the run.

The spearhead of the run game has been Junior Running Back, Jeffery Gonzalez. “Gonzo” has had an incredible season so far gathering 29 carries for 208 yards as well as 4 touchdowns. He is contributing to one-third of the scoring as well as nearly 25% of total offensive yardage.

Cheshire had the opportunity to continue this streak on September 30th at home against Daniel Hand. For the Rams' senior class, there is a personal rivalry between them and Hand. In 2018 Cheshire beat Madison in the 8th-grade football championship, and this rivalry came to a head in what is potentially these two teams' final matchup.

“They’re already beaten down, starting the season 1-2. So if we come out hard it's going to lead to another big win” Said Senior Brett Rotchford when asked about the matchup against Hand.
