If you are a high-scoring student interested in STEM and specifically medicine, Johns Hopkins may be an appealing choice for you.
Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Johns Hopkins is an urban university ranked 7th in the nation for universities and 3rd for Research Medical Schools according to US News. On top of this, 80% of the school’s pre-med students get accepted into medical school, according to the university’s “Fast Facts” article. Given that the national average for a college is roughly 40% according to MedEdits, Johns Hopkins undoubtedly produces successful medical students.
Even for those not set on a career in medicine, Johns Hopkins is still a strong selection for exemplary students. For instance, 97% of pre-law students from Johns Hopkins succeed in being admitted to law school. The university also reports an average student-to-faculty ratio of 7:1, meaning that students will receive more help and attention from their professors, as classes will be smaller on average. Aspiring scientists can also find fulfillment in Johns Hopkins, as the university has been greatly involved in many research projects, ranging from NASA’s DART spacecraft to inventing the first cardiac pacemaker.
These benefits come at a high cost, however. As a “Mini-Ivy” with an acceptance rate of 8%, being admitted to Johns Hopkins can be a herculean task. Based on information from the university’s 2021-2022 Common Data Set, academics are the most important factor in admission. This indicates that aspects such as GPA and application essays have somewhat greater importance than extracurriculars and an applicant’s genuine interest. Furthermore, according to Naviance, few people from Cheshire High School are admitted to Johns Hopkins each year. Hence, if applicants wish to be accepted to the university, they ought to maintain as high grades as possible and excel in their application essays.
