The University of California Los Angeles is known for its beautiful and large campus, alongside its excellence in both academics and athletics.  I recently interviewed my sister Joanne Junaedi, who is a UCLA student majoring in aerospace engineering, to share her experiences.

Q: Why did you choose UCLA?

A: I chose UCLA because of its good academic programs as well as the location and the nice weather.

Q: What was your first day experience like?

A: The first day was scary and very overwhelming because it was very different from what I was used to in high school. The lectures are very big and it was hard to approach professors but I tried to make friends in classes.

Q: What is the community like there?

A: The community is very nice here, we have over 30k undergrad so there are many different communities you can join, but it is up to you to find your community.

Q: What kind of opportunities are provided?

A:  There are many research opportunities. A lot of professors need help and are willing to allow you to help with their research and learn more about what they are doing. There are also so many clubs as opportunities, there is a club for every niche and interest that you may have.

Q: What are some perks of going to UCLA?

A: There are many perks of going to UCLA. There are a lot of days with good weather and UCLA has the number one dining hall. There is a lot of variety in the food offered and it is good quality.

Q: Are there any downsides to UCLA?

A: The downside is that it is very big, so it is up to you to look for resources and take initiative.  If you don’t, you will fall behind.

Q: What’s your advice for future UCLA students and those who want to go there?

A: Join lots of clubs and be sure to make lots of friends because that is how you make your community.
