Reading

Reader's Workshop

In our literacy block, we will use the Comprehension ToolKit lessons and reader’s workshop model each day to provide independent and small group opportunities for learners to strengthen their reading fluency, comprehension, and constructed responses to reading. This approach allows students to have collaboration and independence as well as practice reading and writing each day. This will allow us to differentiate in the classrooms to meet with students in small groups and 1:1 conferences to provide skill-based and individual support each week. We use both fiction and nonfiction texts to practice our reading strategies and build a love for reading.

Read Alouds

Read Alouds are one of the most powerful tools a teacher and parent can do to inspire children to read, enjoy books, and develop their creativity and imagination. Read Alouds are one of the most sacred times in our classroom, and something we look forward to every day! We are always looking for recommendations!

Storyworks Jr. Magazine

Students will receive a monthly Storyworks Jr. Magazine which are specifically designed to support our reading curriculum and standards. Students will engage in rich fiction and non-fiction texts as they practice their reading comprehension skills. Independent Reading Level Assessment Framework (IRLA)

"American Reading Company's Independent Reading Level Assessment is a game-changing formative assessment for reading that changes the daily behaviors of teachers, students, and administrators.

The IRLA is one tool that works with every student, at every reading level, K–12, in English and Spanish. The IRLA delivers specific and actionable data that tells the teacher where a student is, why, and the sequence of skills/behaviors she needs to learn next to accelerate her reading growth.

The IRLA is not intended to limit what students read. Rather, the IRLA's reading taxonomy simplifies the complexity of the reading process, allowing teachers to support every reader, with whatever books that reader chooses. As one user said, "the IRLA takes the mystery out of teaching reading."
