Rhyming Books, Poems, and Songs
Reading rhyming books and poems, and singing songs with the students will improve their understanding of rhyming. Teachers can emphasize and exaggerate the rhymes and verse in a fun way to engage students.
Each student will have a Bingo board and some sort of marker (button, coin, Bingo dauber, etc.). The teacher will call out a word, and the student will find, and mark, a picture on their board that rhymes with the teacher's word. The first student with five in a row wins.
Using words with a maximum of four phonemes, students stand and touch their head, shoulders, knees, and toes as they say each sound (segment) of the word. For example, for the word cat, they would touch their head for /c/, their shoulders for /a/, and their knees for /t/.
