Everyone learns differently, but one of the key components all learning styles share is the need for practice. I've designed our course so you can practice your knowledge and make mistakes before an assessment.
The grading structure of this course is designed to prepare you for the assessment heavy pathway you will encounter in future classes in your health care career education. Grading based on mastery of knowledge demonstrated during assessments ensures that your progress reflects a true understanding of the material, helping you develop the study skills and learning insights needed for long-term success.
I trust that we are all here to learn and want to succeed. Sometimes there are external factors that impede our learning, like having to pick up an extra shift at work, or help a loved one if they get sick. And sometimes, you're forced to choose between being successful in your education and other obligations in your life. I want you to reach out to me when you have things going on in your life that are preventing you from being successful so we can work together to find a way to help you through!r
I understand that sometimes things come up, and a bit of flexibility in the workflow can help you balance everything going on.
Lab and lecture quizzes will occur weekly in class, so it is in your best interest to complete the videos, study guides, and other learning activities in a timely manner to prepare for the lab and lecture quizzes.
If an in-person quiz is missed, it can be made up during open hours. The quiz must be made up within one week of the original quiz date. If the quiz is not made up within one week, a score of zero will be given.
For example, if you miss a quiz that was taken at 3pm on Wednesday, you have until 2:59pm on Wednesday to make up that quiz during my open hours.
Any exam that is missed must be made up within one week of the original exam date. If the exam is not made up within one week of the original date, a score of zero will be given. Exams can be made up during my open hours or at a time of your choosing at the testing center.
It's really helpful to keep an open line of communication with me about your progress, and any challenges that may be impeding your success. I'm here to help you with any challenges that may arise!
I have designed this course with a focus on learning and applying the concepts we learn to the our everyday lives. The lecture videos and the lecture quizzes are intended to help you build your foundational knowledge of biological concepts and for you to get feedback on how you're doing with the concepts. The exams are opportunities for demonstrating your progression through our course learning goals.
Weekly lecture quizzes to help you build foundational knowledge of course concepts (10% of your grade, 10 points each, lowest score is dropped)
These will be short quizzes covering the previous week's material, taken in class during lecture time
Each week you will complete the lab activities in lab. After completing the lab activity you will:
Complete a lab quiz to demonstrate your knowledge of the concepts investigated in the previous week's lab (30% of your grade, 20 points per quiz, lowest score is dropped)
Part of this quiz is closed note, for the rest of the quiz you can use your lab packet to help answer the questions
It's part of my job as your instructor to keep track of your progress with course learning goals and to provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your mastery of those learning goals - this is the purpose of assessments. For each assessment, you are allowed one 8.5x11" single sided, hand written note page. There are no re-takes of exams.
You will have two opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge on midterm exams (35% of your grade)
These will be both multiple choice and short answer exams
Exams are in weeks 4 and 8
To assess the knowledge you've gained throughout the entire term, there will be one cumulative exam at the end of the term (25% of your grade)
While the individual points for assignments in our class may vary, the final total is calculated based on the weighting system above. The gradebook in Canvas will be set up to reflecting this weighting system. The only rounding that happens is at the end of the term. I round to the nearest whole number for any scores that are close to the next grade up.
89.5-100%: A
79.5-89.4%: B
69.5-79.4%: C
59.5-69.4%: D
Below 59.5%: F
