About Activity - Aerial silk, also known as tissue or fabric, is a relatively new art whose origins are disputed. The first alleged mention of it was in a small French newspaper article written in 1959. The article mentions that a student at a circus school performed an incredible act using a long piece of cloth. In India many people used this art in dance but in 2017 with the initiative of Mr. Sunil Gangawane, the movement to make this art into a form of sport started and in 2018 it got a form of sport. Aerial was organized at the national level and in the last few years their national competitions started. Athletes doing aerial develop overall strength, concentration, flexibility was seen to have increased tremendously. It is making great progress as a sport that can be easily played by people of any age.
About the Coach - Tumbling Academy of Gymnastics is run by Mr. Sunil Gangawane.
Sunil Gangawane himself is a National Gold Medalist. He has been training athletes for the last 30 years. He has coached many national and international athletes. He was a player himself from 1980 to 1995 and has been coaching players since 1996. In recognition of his work, the Government of Maharashtra has honored him with the award for the best coach of 2019-20.
Mr. Sunil Gangawane has been working as the secretary of Mumbai Suburban District Mallakhamb Association since 2017 and was selected as the coach of the Indian team in the first World Cup Mallakhamb held in 2019. Sagar Ovalkar, whom he coached, has won 3 gold and 2 silver medals in international competitions and has been honored by the Government of Maharashtra with the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Award. Rupali Gangawane has set a national record by winning 4 gold medals in the national competition. Mansi Malunjkar is the winner of Khelo India University Game.
Mr. Sunil Gangawane took the initiative to establish the 2018 Aerial Sports Association of India and worked hard to spread the sport to 20 states in India. He is currently working as the Secretary of the Aerial Sports Association of India. He has also been a member of the Technical Committee of the Mallakhamb Federation of India since 2017.
