Student Advocate Overview
The Student Advocate's job is to act as a bridge between home and school. It is another layer of support connected to the Guidance Department that addresses academic, organizational, social, and/or behavioral concerns. The advocate's aim is to work with students and their families to ensure the student is involved, connected, thriving, and working towards achieving their academic and social potential at East. This is achieved by understanding what supports and programs East has to offer, and how to navigate and gain access to those supports with all stakeholders collaborating (family, student, and educators) believe are best for that student.
Academically
* To assist students to understand the expectations of their teachers and how to achieve their potential in that course.
* To set academic goals for themselves, seek support, and learn to communicate their needs appropriately with adults in order to reach them.
*To encourage communication between home and school. Home visits can be made to communicate concerns and expectations between both parents and teachers.
*To help students understand the relevance of school & how that relates to their dreams and goals they have set for themselves.
Organizationally
*To help students plan out study time at home and when to go for extra help.
*To encourage consistent use of their planner.
*To help the students understand themselves as learners-how do they learn the best.
*Plan projects so that they are completed a little at a time and not all at once.
Socially
*Encourage students to get connected and involved with their school by finding activities they they can become involved in. You are now a member of our school family-Become an active part of your school.
*Mediate conflict between students.
*Find adults in the building that can connect and mentor students.
*To encourage students to understand expectations and the culture of the building, its' expectations, and appropriate behaviors.
*To hone in on each student's strengths and interests and utilize that lense to guide how they can be used successfully with their academics, behaviors, and social situations.
