The iDream program is a several-week virtual enrichment program for students to learn about different healthcare specialties and topics from black healthcare professionals. Response from a former ECHHS student, "I got to participate in the program last year and it was honestly the best healthcare-oriented program I got to experience because of all that we got to learn and also because of how students in the program got to interact with and communicate with various inspirational black healthcare professionals. Last year, I got a scholarship to attend the program for free and I think the program partners with educational institutions to offer more scholarships for students to attend the program."

The podcast was started by Dr. Jasmine Weiss, a black physician at UNC. Through the B-MED podcast, students interested in health careers get to learn more about the process of getting involved in healthcare from black healthcare professionals who have done really inspirational things for others.

For highly motivated high school students! Students will learn to use research tools that are currently used by scientists. Our camps provide a great opportunity for students to build research skills and learn more about the intersection between biology and computer science. Specifically, students will learn and engage in computational biology tools, analyzing high throughput sequencing data, and R programming for research.

A unique feature of our camps is that students will be eligible to continue their learning experience with the miRcore Volunteer Program, which meets throughout the school year online (remote students) and in person (at University of Michigan and at UCSD). Our volunteer program guides students for year-long group research to publish research abstracts and to present at our Annual High School Research Conference (2023 keynote speaker: Dr. Lindsey Criswell, Director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), NIH). Beyond personal research advances, miRcore Volunteer Program supports student growth in leadership and healthcare advocacy through student-directed voluntary activities. Volunteers are trained to lead school club Genes in Diseases and Symptoms, where they teach other students precision medicine and research methods to participate in the Conference. Our volunteer program also initiated miRcore Vaccine Advocacy to train students to empathetically share vaccine facts with others. With the Vaccine Advocacy activities, we recently held a vaccine workshop at local high school biology classes.

Game2Learn High School Internship

The Game2Learn Lab at NC State University values broadening participation in computing and helping all students become literate in 21st-century computing skills including programming, AI, Data Analytics, and computing for social good. Our unpaid high school internship program allows high school students to embed themselves within our research lab environment helping K-12 teachers develop Snap!-based educational tools and games for use in their classrooms. Each summer, over 20 local high school students participate in a 6-week internship program designed to hone their computing skills and see how computing is used to help solve socially relevant problems. In 2019, interns partnered with over 50 high school and middle school teachers in Science, Math, English Language Arts, and Social Studies in order to create coding infused activities to be used in active classrooms during the upcoming school year. In summer 2020, this program was successfully transitioned into an online program which allowed 30 interns to create over 100 computing-infused activities for teachers. Through this program, we also conduct research on how to best provide computer science learning experiences through internships and support the creation of computer science curriculum.
