This workshop examines sensory integration and processing within play therapy through a neuroscience-informed and neurodiversity-affirming framework. Drawing from sensory integration theory originated by Jean A. Ayers and the constructs generated by Winnie Dunn’s Model of Sensory Processing, participants will explore how sensory modulation patterns influence affect regulation, attention, behavior, and relational functioning in children in play therapy treatment.
The training reviews core constructs including the neurodiversity paradigm, sensory-based neurological and behavioral responses, with attention to vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory, visual, olfactory, and interoceptive sensory systems. Empirical literature linking sensory processing differences with neurodevelopmental concerns, attachment issues, and developmental trauma will be examined. Participants will also review emerging findings on allostasis, autonomic nervous system bias (sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance), and their implications for clinical presentation and therapeutic support.
Emphasis will be placed on differential conceptualization—distinguishing trauma-related hyperarousal from sensory hypersensitivity, and withdrawal from parasympathetic under-arousal. The workshop will translate research into play therapy application by demonstrating evidence-informed, regulation-focused play interventions designed to support co-regulation, enhance neural integration, and promote regulating sensory processing.
Play Therapy clinical implications for treatment planning, interdisciplinary collaboration with occupational therapy, parents, teachers, and development of sensory-supportive playroom environments will be addressed.
Participants will leave with an evidence-grounded framework for integrating sensory-informed assessment and intervention into play therapy practice to support improved regulatory capacity and therapeutic engagement.

Describe the neurobiological foundations of sensory integration and explain how play facilitates autonomic regulation and neural integration in children.
Differentiate sensory processing patterns (hyporeactive, hyperreactive, sensory seeking, sensory avoiding) as demonstrated through children’s play behaviors and relational engagement.
Analyze play themes, movement patterns, and regulatory responses to distinguish trauma-related dysregulation from sensory-based challenges.
Demonstrate at least three sensory-informed play therapy interventions designed to promote co-regulation and support self-regulation in the playroom.
Apply neurodiversity-affirming principles to modify play materials, playroom stimuli, and play therapist responses to accommodate diverse sensory profiles.
Select and justify sensory-informed play interventions based on observed play behaviors, autonomic presentation, and sensory processing patterns."
