This training explores how Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) is applied in culturally responsive ways integrating familial values, culture and experiences. Grounded in cognitive behavioral theory and the therapeutic powers of play (Remey, 2025; Geraci et al., 2025), CBPT offers a developmentally attuned framework in which thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are addressed through both directive and nondirective play experiences. Cultural responsiveness is essential within this process, as children’s beliefs, self-talk, and worldview are shaped by family values, traditions, and experiences.
Children often tell stories before they are able to articulate internal dialogue directly. Through storytelling, metaphor, and symbolic play, children externalize their experiences and rehearse new perspectives in ways that are accessible and developmentally appropriate. This session highlights how clinicians can intentionally remain attuned to culturally embedded themes within play narratives and use these moments to support cognitive restructuring while honoring the child’s cultural identity and family system.
Emphasis is placed on using client-identified materials—such as favorite shows, songs, and narratives—as entry points for understanding and exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviors within a CBPT framework. Through both directive and nondirective approaches, clinicians will learn how to translate these symbolic and relational expressions into meaningful therapeutic interventions. Participants will leave with practical, developmentally responsive tools to integrate culturally attuned CBPT interventions, enhancing their capacity to support the development of adaptive self-talk, emotional regulation, and resilience within the context of each child’s cultural identity and therapeutic goals.
