This year, we will spend time in each grade level discussing different disabilities and differently abled people. The goal of this monthly highlight is to generate awareness around different abilities (especially seen versus unseen) and help students understand that "disabilities" do not mean that people cannot do things. Below, you'll find information on what book each grade level will read and the accompanying activity we plan to do. We will do these lessons once throughout the year, with dates TBD.
Book: Susan Laughs
Activity: Students will listen to the book and then create paper dolls of themselves with one thing they can do.
Book: All My Stripes
Activity: Students will listen to the book, then color in their own zebra and add four unique traits about themselves to the zebra's stripes.
Book: My Brother Charlie
Activity: Students will listen to the book, then write down a strength they have. They will have to find someone in the room with a different strength that would help them or teach them something new.
Book: Moses Goes to a Concert
Activity: Students will listen to the book and then practice a phrase in American Sign Language with a group.
Book: Wanda Hears the Stars
Activity: Students will listen to the book and then play a game where volunteers cover their eyes and guess what object is being held by another volunteer based on sound, touch, and/or smell.

Activity: Students will read through an excerpt from the book and then build
