I fully believe that the word "consequence" is neutral! I focus on giving positive reinforcement through STAR Student Tickets, parent phone calls/emails, positive referrals, and more. New this year, I'm distributing badges (stickers) for each student's Counseling Journal. More information is found below.
As I teach lessons, I will be defining and emphasizing a "badge" that students can earn for working hard to demonstrate or exemplify that skill. Badges will be introduced at the beginning of lessons and align with lesson topics and normally align with Character Traits of the Month. By the end of each lesson, students will (hopefully) have earned their badge for that skill.
For example, during the first lesson that I teach about empathy will be accompanied by the opportunity to earn the "Empathy Explorer" badge. The badges will be given out at the end of lessons as a sort of exit ticket, or check for understanding.
In the (rare) event that a student does not work to earn a badge in a given lesson, I will provide that student an opportunity to earn that badge at home with their guardians, who will be able to sign off that their student worked on that particular skill. This will also be given to students who are absent from a lesson. These opportunities are not required, but will have to be done to earn a badge that a student missed earning during my lesson. This is a great way for adults at home to get involved in your student's social and emotional learning!
If you'd like more information on what I'm looking for with each skill and badge, the general guidelines "checklists" for each are linked below.
