Writing From Boxes scaffolds sentence writing for emerging writers and speakers. Students begin by recording the sentence frame on the far left box on a separate piece of paper. They then add one of the choices from the middle boxes. Finally, they finish their sentence with a word in the far right box. This strategy also requires that students read aloud the words in order to write sentences/paragraphs that make sense. This strategy can be used across all grade levels and content areas to support students.
Display the sentences from boxes sheet at the front of the room or give each student a copy. Explain that students will use these boxes as a tool to write sentences.
Model writing a sentence for the students. Show them how you start each sentence with the frame on the left (I see the___). Write that frame on a separate piece of paper. Then you write the color (blue). Next you find the shape that is that color and write that (rectangle).
Show students the whole sentence: I see the blue rectangle. Read it as a class.
Then guide the students in using the boxes to write a sentence on their own paper.
Finally, have the students work in pairs to write their own sentences.
Have students continue in this manner until they’ve written sentence for each of the colors and shapes.
