Students complete sentences using sentence stems you have provided them. They then "rove" around the classroom to find a partner. Once they partner up, they read their sentences to each other. You then give them the next sentence stem and repeat the process until each student has completed a paragraph on the target concept.
This activity can help even students that struggle to write complete a solid paragraph on a topic using target vocabulary and good sentence structure.
This activity gets students out of their seats and interacting with other students which is great for motivation, energy levels, and developing oral language.
All students are participating at the same time. There is very little waiting around.
Students practice speaking, listening, reading, writing, target vocabulary, paragraph structure, the list just keeps going...!
Students write a sentence using a sentence stem
Note: Sentence stems should elicit multiple responses, such as 3 reasons, 3 aspects, 3 explanations.
They then "rove" around the classroom to find a partner. Once they partner up, they read their sentence(s) to each other.
Ask students to write a new sentence that begins with a new stem
Note: Students can “steal” their partner’s response if it was different than their own or just create a fresh sentence.
Once sentence #2 is complete, partners raise their hands or stand back to back indicating they are ready to “rove” again.
Have the students find new partners, and repeat the entire process with the second partner. It is crucial to instruct students to read everything they have written so far and for the partner to listen and then read everything that he/she has written so far as well.
Continue the process until all sentence stems are complete. Students can later edit their paragraphs or continue to write!
