Referee Positioning

It is important for each referee and AR to maintain the best position throughout the game so that they can make the best calls.

  • Center Referees should try to stay within 10–15 yards of the action (i.e. where the play/ball is)

  • Each AR is responsible for watching half of the field, and do not need to position themselves beyond the half-line during a game

  • The AR should move back and forth along the touchline in their half, so that they remain IN-LINE with the 2nd to last defender at all times. This helps the AR more clearly see the play and helps them identify off-sides situations

  • On a corner kick, the AR should stand directly BEHIND the corner flag, in order to see the play unfolding
