Becoming a Referee
Becoming a recreational referee is a great way to be involved in the game of soccer and to learn the rules, strategy, and tactics of the game. Being a referee also allows you to build confidence in yourself by taking on the role of authority at the match.
There are two types of referees in soccer. The Referee (sometimes referred to as the Center Referee) is the referee in charge of managing the match. One or two Assistant Referees (AR) assist the referee by watching for and signaling out-of-bound balls and fouls.
Referee Assignment Age Requirements
Referee assignments are based on the age of the referee and/or their grade in school. All referees must be at least 12 years old.
Commitment
As the referee is the one in charge of the match, it’s important to take this responsibility seriously and to make the proper commitment to it. As a referee you commit to:
Officiate matches in a fair and safe manner that ensures player and spectator enjoyment
Grant players and coaches their dignity and self-respect
NOTE: This goes both ways – anyone not showing you appropriate respect should be reported to one of the CYSA Directors
Remain committed to learning and improving your knowledge of the game and referee skills
Stay focused on the game in order to do your best
Ensure you are physically fit and able to perform the role of Referee or AR as assigned
Support your fellow officials
Faithfully keep all appointments and assignments
Notify the Referee Director ASAP if you cannot perform an assignment
