Parent Email for Sunday May 10, 2020
Happy Sunday and Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful day with the ones you love the most!
We have finally made it to the last full week of third grade! It’s a bitter sweet feeling as the last 2 months of school have been like nothing I have ever experienced. I have truly missed seeing your children, hearing their stories & laughing with them. I know most people hate it, but I missed the opportunity to prep them for the EOG. They were on the path to knock it out of the park!
For our last full week of instruction, we are going to be measuring to the nearest ½ & ¼ inch. I encourage you to give them a ruler & let them measure things in the house & outside. Measuring will be a review of fractions as they will work with rulers divided into 2 parts between each inch or 4 parts between inches. They will have another Brain Pop Jr video to watch & at least one more from me.
I have left Monday open for catch up, but you will notice Friday is also open. During the week I will notify you of missing assignments from our 5 weeks of distance learning. I would like to get as much make up work as possible turned in by Friday. The week of May 18 will be full of fun activities!
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Hug your children for me! Stay Safe!
Parent Letter May 3, 2020
Hi! We’ve made it to May! Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel?
Last week was another great week! I do have one request. When posting assignments to Class Dojo, please make sure the assignment you are posting matches the assignment description. For example, I had a lot of various assignments posted under “May 1, Spiral Review”. The spiral review has “Spiral Review” written at the top of the page. It makes things on my side much more organized and easier to check in.
Again, this week, I have left Monday open for catching up. Parents, please utilize this day. I have quite a few missing assignments!
This week we are focused on telling time! Students should have been introduced to telling time in the 2ndgrade by telling time to the nearest 5 minutes. This year we expand that idea and tell time to the nearest minute. I have a video for students to watch on Tuesday. Then I use Khan Academy Wednesday & Thursday. There are 2 worksheets for Friday. I will post answers to a few questions from each page on Class Story. This way students can check their work & make sure they are on the right track before completing & uploading assignments.
Reach out if you have questions! Have a great week!
Sunday April 19, 2020
Happy Sunday! Hopefully everyone has gotten some rest and is ready for week 2 of Distance Learning!
Let me say first of all what a great job I thought everyone did last week! I saw lots of smiling faces on Zoom and lots of assignments being completed on Khan Academy & Xtra Math! Thank you to all of the parents because I know we could not make this happen without you. I know some of you are exhausted with schedule changes and your new teaching jobs! Before we start this week, I want to remind you of a few things:
This is still a work in progress, if you run into problems, take a deep breath & email me
I am looking for my students to be actively engaged with math. They should be doing their best.
The calendar is a guide, students can work at their pace (faster or slower). The goal is to finish by Sunday
ZOOM calls are not mandatory! We have eliminated our social call for the week and will now just be doing a Reading Help and a Math Help call (details below)
Please have students check Class Dojo daily & answer the Daily Question. This is how we are taking attendance
If you run into problems, take a breath & know that we will figure something out. Your child will not be penalized for any technical difficulties! If we need to make an adjustment to something you are doing & make it work another way for you, then that is what we will do.
So, let's head into the week.
The first thing I need for you to do is throw out the calendar for this week that was with your packet! I looked at what we accomplished last week and have made adjustments. The new calendar is attached. I am sticking with Khan Academy & Xtra Math since you have mastered these sites!
Here are the changes to the calendar.
Monday is going to be our day to catch up on any Khan Academy assignments that you did not finish last week!
Based on feedback, I am going to load a few short videos to Class Dojo on Tuesday. They will go over Fractions Greater than One. I will have a few things for students to practice to make sure they understand. (Currently I am planning a a few short videos instead of something longer)
I am shifting M-W to W-F
Changes to ZOOM calls. I understand that you may be dealing with a tangle of ZOOM calls right now (especially if you have more than 1 child!). Mrs. Long & I are condensing our ZOOM calls to 2 per week and they are both "as needed" (NOT mandatory)! Students needing a little extra math help will join my ZOOM on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. Students needing extra help with reading will join Mrs. Long's ZOOM on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. If you do not need help with what we are currently working on for the week, please don't join the meeting. I want to make sure we are answering questions and working toward understanding.
Spiral Review - This week I added on a spiral review for Monday - Thursday. The page was in your packet for week 2. You will see that it is divided into 4 sections (one for each day). On Friday, I will post this as an assignment in Class Dojo so students can take a picture of the page & post it for my review.
Keep up the great work! Stay in touch! Stay safe!

Hello! Wow, it was another great week!
I’m amazed at how well you guys are working with Class Dojo, Khan Academy & Xtra Math. Iknow from time to time we are running into issues & questions, but hopefully we are addressing those things so you can keep moving.
It looks like most everybody is getting the hang of answering the daily question in Class Dojo. Remember this is what we use for attendance so please try to check in each day before 11:00 PM. I see a lot of activity & completed assignments in Khan Academy. Some of you are working on your fluency in Xtra Math but I do see several names with no activity. If you have not worked in Xtra Math, please try and do so this week. I would like to see 20 – 30 minutes per week spent here on fluency. (You will need this next year!). If you need your log in informationfor this site, please let me know. I’ll be glad to resend it.
I wanted to mention a few things about last Friday (April 24). First, let me apologize for posting some incorrect answers to worksheet page 16! I hope it didn’t cause too much confusion! I did repost the corrected version later in the morning. Second, students had 3 assignments to post on Friday: Spiral Review for the week, Same Sized Pieces-Comparing Fractions with Like Denominators p.15 and Same Number of Pieces-Comparing Fractions with Like Numerators p. 18. If you have not posted these, please do so by Monday.
Tomorrow, new packets should be picked at the school. These packets contain student workfor the next 3 weeks. See Mrs. Long’s email from Friday with the pickup schedule. If you are unable to pick your packet up tomorrow, please contact the school to arrange a time to stop by.
***All assignments for me have been completed online or submitted through Class Dojo. There is no work that needs to be physically returned to school unless you were unable to post it!
So, take a deep breath & get ready for week 3! This will be our last week of fractions!
Monday is another catch-up day. Use tomorrow to complete any Khan Academy videos or practices not yet finished. It would be a good time to try & get into Xtra Math if youhaven’t already done so. Today is also pick up day for new packets.
Tuesday & Wednesday wrap up fractions on Khan Academy. There is a worksheet in your current packets, Finding Equivalent Fractions – 9 problems. I would like this page uploaded to Dojo on Wednesday. (a few of you have already submitted it, so I haveyours). It was dated “Friday 4/24”.
Thursday you’ll have fraction word problems in your packet. The “cards” with theproblems have QR codes that can be scanned to check your work. (I hope they all copied dark enough to be scanned, if not, let me know & I will post the answers!)
Your packet has EOG Fraction Questions for Friday. These problems were pulled from an EOG practice test (please note, this is why the problem numbers skip around!). The last
page of the packet is a Bubble Answer Sheet. Once you have answered all 10 questions, color in the bubbles of the correct answers for each question. Take a photo of this ONE page & upload to Class Dojo.
New page of Spiral Review
What’s next you may ask! The week of May 4 will be telling time! I will send out the May 4calendar next Sunday. I wanted to avoid any confusion if we had to adjust the calendar before next week. You will see the work for this week in your packet. As always you can work ahead.
Lastly, I had a parent reach out last week to share some challenges they were having with the assignments. If you are having trouble or your child is spending more than an hour on math each day, please let me know. That is not my intent. I tried to consider various levels of learning when I wrote my plans and planned each day estimating the content would take about 45 minutes. If it is taking longer than that, please slow down and work at your child’s pace. I am leaving Monday’s open for catch up! If you have issues that extend beyond that, please let meknow.
Have a great week. Keep up the good work, and as always let me know what questions, concerns or issues you may have. Stay safe!

Dear Parents,
Can you see that light at the end of the tunnel! We've made it to the last week of school. Thank you for all of your patience & hard work. Another big thank you to all of my parents that made sure missing work was made up & turned it!
As promised, this week is going to be fun. I do have a packet for you to pick up from school tomorrow. In your packet you will find ME! It's my Bitmoji. Since I can't spend this fun week with my students, I thought this would be the closest thing to it. I want them to take pictures of ME doing fun things with them. I hope to share some of their favorite things. Post pictures for me on Class Dojo or email! I will be using some of them for our End of Year slideshow on Thursday.
Students also have a BINGO game to play. They need to cut & paste to create their own BINGO board. I have scheduled a ZOOM meeting Tuesday at 5:00 PM to play BINGO. Prizes will be included with their end of year pick up materials. Before your child joins the call to play, make sure they have something to mark their board with (cereal, coins, rocks, etc...).
Topic: BINGO ZOOM
Time: May 19, 2020 05:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5687783127?pwd=K21TbjJuNnlvZldxcmlXRWM5THBqdz09 Meeting ID: 568 778 3127 Password: 803546
I have also included a Third Grade Memory Book for students to work on. I would love for you to share a few pages with me as your child finishes them (I may also be able to include on the slideshow)
One more fun thing...I am attaching a link here so that your child can vote for Class Superlatives.Instead of me handing out class awards, I thought it would be fun to let the class vote. Results will be revealed on our Thursday call! Please have your child complete the survey by Tuesday!
Survey Link (please copy & paste) - https://forms.gle/UNSTDZZHWESQ5AHm6
Thursday - As mentioned above, I will schedule a final ZOOM meeting for our class this Thursday. I will follow up with a time as I know CGS has several things planned for the day & I don't want to conflict with them. During this call, we will go through our Class Superlatives & a slideshow that's all about us!
Classroom items pickup will be next Tuesday the 26th . We are still hammering out the details for times and I will let you know more specifics at some point this week.
There will also be school-wide awards like in the past at some point and I will get you that information once I have it.
It's going to be a busy week! Please let me know if you have any questions.
