German 1
The German 1 course focuses on basic grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary of the German language, including study of culture and current events, and the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The German 1 course utilizes a variety of resources: Deutsch Aktuell 1 textbook, Deutsch Aktuell 1 audio and video program, German periodicals and newspaper, and the Internet. The primary goal of this course is to help the students develop linguistic proficiency and cultural sensitivity. By linking language and culture, the course seeks to broaden the students' communication skills while at the same time deepening their appreciation of the German culture. The course incorporates a variety of language learning activities to accommodate the learning styles of all the students in the classroom. These activities include: oral teacher presentations, visuals, charts, television and videos, role-play, collaborative learning activities, music, and games.
The aim of the German 1 course is to develop the following competencies:
1. Knowledge of gender of nouns and their cases in the sentence
2. Knowledge of subject pronouns
3. Regular/irregular/stem changing/modal auxiliary verb forms
4. Sentence composition
5. Pronunciation and Intonation
6. Simple German dictation
7. Translation from German into English and vice versa
8. Short written narrative that presents a clear point on an assigned topic, using
correct sentences, noun/verb agreement, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling
9. Cultural understanding of German holidays, the German school system, family life,
travel and tourism in German speaking countries, music and mass media in
German speaking countries, and the youth culture of Germany
