Big Ideas from this Unit: In Bits and Pieces, students will practice finding equivalent fractions with models, fraction strips, and just the numbers! Students will also learn how to change between improper fractions to mixed numbers and vise versa. Finally, the students will practice adding and subtracting fractions with like AND unlike denominators. Students must learn to find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) to use as their "new" denominator when solving these challenging problems!

Big Ideas from this Unit: In 3D Geometry and Measurement, students will practice finding the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes. They will practice several strategies, but will mainly rely on the formulas (V = l x w x h) and (V = B x h). The students will understand that volume refers to how much space is inside of something and must be measured using a cubic unit. Students will also practice converting between units such as kilograms to grams or limiters to liters.

Big Ideas from this Unit: In our longest unit of the year, this unit can be broken down into 4 subsections which each last about a week. Students will begin first by practicing multiplying a whole number by a fraction and be able to represent it using a model. Then, students will solve division problems of a whole number divided by a unit fraction, as well as a unit fraction divided by a whole number. Again, representations are key when it comes to solving these problems. In the last half, students will practice multiplying and dividing decimals by whole numbers and by other decimals using the standard algorithm for multiplication and division.

Big Ideas from this Unit: This unit begins by identifying two types of patterns on input/output tables- Multiplicative and Additive. An additive pattern is one where the same number is added to the input (x) each time to get the output (y). For example: y = x + 5. A multiplicative pattern is one in which the input (x) is multiplied by the same number each time to get the output (y). For example: y = x ⋅ 5. Students will also practice graphing the data from these patterns onto coordinate grids by converting the data into ordered pairs.

Big Ideas: The STAAR Test will be over everything students have done thoughout the year. To best prepare, review all concepts from throughout the year. Student's math journals are an AMAZING review as they contain notes over everything we have done!
Released STAAR Questions
A great resource to prepare for this years STAAR is to review question from past STAAR tests. While the questions will not be exactly the same, they will be over the same concept or idea.
