Section 1: Response Method
In section one of the Exam, when discussing and analysing the use of Elements & Principles in an artwork, you must consider these 4 Key Points: What, Where, How & Why
WHAT - Identify the element or principle being used.
- Clearly, state which element (e.g., line, colour, texture) or principle (e.g., balance, emphasis, movement) you are discussing.
- Be specific about the type (e.g., bold, curvilinear, monochromatic).
WHERE - Describe where the element or principle is located in the artwork.
- Point out the specific areas of the artwork where the element or principle is evident.
- Use spatial references like "foreground," "background," "upper-left corner," etc.
HOW - Explain how the element or principle is applied.
- Discuss the method or technique used by the artist to create the element or principle.
- Include details about materials, tools, or compositional techniques.
WHY - Analyse why the artist used the element or principle and its effect on the viewer.
- Explain how it contributes to the overall mood or composition of the artwork.
- Identify how it supports the interaction between different elements or principles in the art piece.

Know your Elements & Principles by heart.
No Introduction or Conclusion required- These are ONLY REQUIRED in the Extended Response sections (Section Two & Section 3).
You should only spend 15 minutes on each question.
The question is asking about Elements & Principles NOT the Meaning & Purpose. UNLESS IT STATES OTHERWISE.
