Students are given text at their reading level. With an EA, the student:
Independently reads a paragraph silently.
The student then reads each sentence. After each sentence, they read the bookmark. " I think that means ..." Students are required to retell the sentence in their own words. They think aloud to unpack the meaning by expanding what the words are saying. If a student is unable to do this go to step 3.
The teacher then leads students to clear roadblocks to comprehension. The teacher will ask the student what part of the sentence they are finding difficult to understand. The teacher will then discuss the difficult word or words with the student. The teacher may be able to ask the student questions to lead them to the meaning by discussing the context. Alternatively, they might be able to point out root words or the meaning of prefixes or suffixes.
