The Distillery District in Toronto started in 1832 with two English immigrants, James Worts and William Gooderham, who built a small windmill at the edge of Toronto Bay.
When steam power replaced wind, Gooderham added a distillery, which became a very important business for Toronto’s waterfront. The company once produced about 7,600,000 liters of whisky, most of which was exported worldwide.
The windmill was demolished in the 1860s to make space for more buildings, but the Stone Distillery is still the oldest and largest heritage building in the area.
During World War I, the district was used for war industry work.
Today, the Distillery District is a cultural and tourist destination. It mixes historic Victorian buildings with a modern city vibe and hosts events like the Toronto Christmas Market.
The Distillery District has the largest collection of Victorian industrial buildings in North America.
X‑Men (2000) – The opening scene set during World War II was shot in the Distillery District, using the old brick buildings and cobblestone streets as a dramatic backdrop.
