In the 1960s, Toronto was growing fast, with many new tall buildings.
Radio and TV signals could not reach the top floors of these new buildings.
To fix this, Canadian National (CN) decided to build a tall tower that could broadcast signals far and wide.
Construction started with over 1,500 workers and took more than 40 months.
When it was finished in 1976, the CN Tower became the tallest freestanding structure in the world.
Today, it is one of Toronto’s most famous landmarks, a tourist attraction, and still serves as a broadcast tower.
Tallest for decades – When it opened in 1976, it was the tallest freestanding structure in the world for over 30 years.
Sky-high height – The CN Tower is 553 meters (1,815 feet) tall, almost twice as tall as the Eiffel Tower!
Glass floor – Visitors can look straight down through the glass floor — a favorite for thrill-seekers.
EdgeWalk – Brave visitors can walk around the outside edge of the tower 356 meters above the ground, harnessed safely.
Broadcasting giant – It still sends TV, radio, and communication signals across Toronto.
Lights at night – The tower has a colorful LED lighting system that changes for holidays, events, and sports games.
Elevator speed – The elevators move at about 22 km/h (15 mph), reaching the top in just 58 seconds!
