Casa Loma has secret passageways and hidden staircases, originally built so servants could move around unseen.
It had luxuries ahead of its time, like elevators, central vacuuming, and an oven big enough to roast a whole ox.
Sir Henry Pellatt lived there for less than 10 years, even though the castle took years and a fortune to build.
During World War II, parts of Casa Loma were used to train spies in secret communication.
It’s a popular movie and TV filming location, appearing in films like X-Men, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Chicago.
The castle has 98 rooms, including grand halls, tunnels, and towers with amazing views of Toronto.
Casa Loma is a historic castle located in Toronto, Ontario. It was built between 1911 and 1914 by Sir Henry Pellatt, a wealthy Canadian financier and soldier. Designed by architect E. J. Lennox, the castle was meant to be a grand private residence, complete with towers, secret passageways, stables, and beautifully decorated rooms. At the time, it was the largest private home in Canada.
Unfortunately, Sir Henry Pellatt’s fortune declined soon after the castle was completed, due to financial losses and increased taxes. He was forced to abandon Casa Loma in 1924, less than ten years after moving in. Over the following decades, the building served various purposes, including a luxury hotel, a nightclub, and even a military training site during the Second World War.
In 1937, the City of Toronto took ownership of Casa Loma and opened it to the public as a historic attraction. Today, Casa Loma is a popular museum and event venue, offering visitors a glimpse into early 20th-century life. It is also widely used as a filming location and remains one of Toronto’s most iconic landmarks.
