Semana 1: Bienvenidos! Fundaciones y el Campo de Fútbol Americano (Una Línea de Tiempo Geológico)
This week, we're going to set the groundwork for the rest of the summer. In order to do that, we have to understand how massive the history of our Earth really is!
Today, we'll be looking at the history of Earth. In this activity you will make your own timeline of the 4.5 billion year history of Earth, as well as see a cool video! Oh, and you get to see Mr. Kyle’s terrible drawing skills which is always fun!
Important vocabulary-
Timeline: A graphic representation of time as a line.
Formation: The action or process or forming.
Significant: Great or important.
Cell: The smallest unit of a living thing/organism
Unicellular Organism: Organisms that are made up of a single cell
Materials-
Chromebooks, google canvas
Instructions-
Students will go to canvas.apps.chrome and draw a straight, horizontal line across their screen.
Now, they will all be given 8 significant events in Earth’s history, in a random order, and will then organize the events in chronological order using their best educated guesses.
After their timelines are organized, they will then watch this video: https://youtu.be/M8V_glRW1hA
After watching the video, students will reorganize their timeline in the correct order.
The following day in class, we will make a timeline for our classroom!
Today, we will be making a timeline for our classroom! Each student will decorate a card with one of our 8 significant events, and then hang it up on a clothesline that will act as our timeline!
(Ms. Jeanette's activity tba)
Throughout our program, we will focus on STRIDE every Thursday to wrap up our week and expand our skills in math, science, literacy, and comprehension!
Semana 2: Rocas! Petroglifos y Fósiles
Are y'all ready to get funky with fossils? We know we are, and that's why we're going to be focusing on everything fossils this week! We'll be learning what a fossil is, how they are formed, and even make a few of our own on Tuesday! Let's rock and roll!
Today’s quick lesson and activity will build up your understanding of what a fossil is, what kinds of fossils there are, and see how much you already know. Oh yeah! Did I mention it’s a competition? Did I also mention there will be a prize!?!?
Vocabulary-
Fossilization: The process of a plant or animal being preserved.
Permineralization: The process of minerals, normally carried by water, are deposited replace hard tissue such as bones and cartilage.
Petroglyph: A rock carving or painting.
Materials-
An attention span of more than one minute and your chromebooks!
Process-
Students will begin by tuning into Monday’s google meet! This activity will then begin around 10 am.
Now, Mr. Kyle will share the slideshow (attachment on the left side of this weeks lesson), which will show what a fossil is, what kinds of fossils there are, and how these fossils are formed.
Following this, the game will begin! With their newly found knowledge, students will then decide if the following slides are either trace fossils or living fossils, plants or animals, and ocean or land fossils. Every answer a student answers correctly will earn them a point!
Students with the most point win a super cool, super secret, prize!
For our in person activity today, we’ll be getting to make our very own fossils and petroglyphs! Yay!
Vocabulary-
Fun- something we’ll be having today
Smiles- something else we’ll all have today!!! ( =
Materials-
Molding clay, paperclips, and a can-do-attitude!
Procedure-
Students will each be given molding clay and their paperclips.
Next, students will choose what kind of fossils they will be making! (trace/living, plant/animal,etc.)
Using their clay, and the paperclip to make precise details, they will shape their clay into their fossils!
These fossils will then be left in the classroom to dry, and will be used in next week's activities!
Semana 3: Excavar! Ser un Paleontólogo
Monday: What’s a Paleontologist?
This week is all about the coolest animals to ever roam the world: Dinosaurs! Today, we’re going to learn about diversity within the dinosaur species, when they lived, and the professionals that discover the remains of these prehistoric creatures!
Important Vocabulary-
Excavate- To dig up.
Paleontologist- A scientist who studies the history of Earth through the fossil record.
Prehistoric- Very old.
Materials-
Yourself and a can-do-attitude!
Procedure-
Tune into our live session (9:00 am - 11:00 am) and we’ll get goin!
Tuesday: Can you dig it?
Yesterday we learned all about what a paleontologist does, but now it’s our turn to dig for some dinos!
Important Vocabulary-
Sediment- Material that has been eroded and then transported to a new location
Sedimentary rock- Layered rock made by the deposition of sediment
Skeleton Articulation- Process of converting a dead organism into a cleaned skeleton!
Materials-
Clear plastic cups, multi-colored sand, “digging” utensils, construction paper, glue.
Procedure-
Students will be given cups containing multicolor sand, and hidden dinosaur remains. This will represent an archaeological dig they have been assigned to!
Then, students will begin their dig! They will carefully comb through their cups and remove any findings.
Now, students will begin to piece together their findings! Using glue, construction paper, and any dino remains you have found, piece together the dino skeleton as best you can on the construction paper!
Once your dinosaur is put back together, now we have to look for clues as to what our dinosaur’s life looked like. What kind of food did it eat? How’d it die? When did it live? What was it called?
Now, let’s flesh this fossil out! Color in what it may have looked like, while it was alive, based off the clues you found and what you think about your dinosaur’s past!
Finally, we’ll share!
Wednesday: KAHOOT!
Today, we’ll be expanding our knowledge of dinosaurs with some fun Kahoots made by us and others!
Thursday: STRIDE!
Bet you can’t guess what we’re doing today! I’ll give you a hint, it rhymes with tide and ends with the 5th letter of the alphabet!
Semana 4: Explotar! El Origen de los Volcanes
BOOM!!! This week we will focus on plate tectonics, volcanoes, and how both of these have shaped our world!
Monday
To start off the week, we’d like to explore the history of Mexico! This will set up some archeological finds, along with some trivia on Mexican volcanoes such as Mt. Popo!
Tuesday
Who likes blowing stuff up? I know I do! Make sure you don’t miss out on this weeks demonstration on how volcanoes erupt! You’ll even get an opportunity to set off your very own volcano!!!
Important Vocabulary-
Magma- Molten minerals and rocks below the earth's surface
Lava- Magma that has surfaced
Eruption- A sudden outburst or outbreak
Pyroclastic Flow- The flow of hot ashes and gases following an eruption
Magma Flow- The flow of lava following an eruption
Materials-
Pre-made “volcanoes” (we will make these before hand), catalyst (will be either mentos or baking soda), and protective eye wear.
Procedure-
Students will first watch the teachers presentation (Yes, we get to blow stuff up first)
After watching our example, students will each be given their volcanoes. After this, they will be placed in their own area (6 feet away from each other).
After given permission from a staff member, students will then put their eruption catalyst into their volcano and back up away from their volcano.
BOOOOMMMMMM
Afterwards, students will write observations of the eruptions, and what kind of flow their eruptions made.
Wednesday
What has two syllables and ends with the sound an owl makes: KAHOOT!!! That’s right y’all, your favorite online group game is back again this week with a new volcano theme! WOOOOOOO!!!!!
Thursday
STRIDE day! Let’s get those badges and coins!!!!
