Taking Care of the iPad & MacBook

Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad or MacBook they have been issued by the school. iPads & MacBooks that are broken or fail to work properly will be evaluated by the Central School technology support staff.

iPad/Laptop Identification

Student iPads and laptops will be labeled in the manner specified by the school. iPads and laptops can be identified in the following ways:

• Record of serial number

• Central Community School Asset Tag Label

Storing Your iPad/Laptop

When students are not using their iPad or laptop, they should be stored securely. Your device should remain in the case and a fully zipped bag when not in use. The Central Community School Locks are available in the district office. Nothing should be placed on top of the iPad or laptop when stored in the locker.

Students are encouraged to take their iPad or laptop home every day after school, regardless of whether or not it is needed. iPads and laptops should not be stored in student vehicles at school or at home. If a student needs a secure place to store his/her iPad or laptop, he/she may check it in for storage in the school library or office.

iPads/Laptops Left in Unsupervised Areas

Under no circumstances should iPads or laptops be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include school grounds, the commons, lobbies, locker rooms, the library, unlocked classrooms, hallways, and unlocked lockers. Any device left unattended in these areas is at risk of theft.

If an iPad or laptop is found in an unsupervised area, it will be confiscated, taken to the school office, and handled as a Tier 1 Care Infraction under Section 12.1. Disciplinary consequences will be enforced as follows:

• 1st Offense: Deemed an abuse of technology privileges. The student will lose overnight take-home and day-use privileges for one (1) school day and operate as an In-School Day-User.

• 2nd Offense: The student will lose overnight take-home and day-use  privileges for five (5) school days and operate as an In-School Day-User.

• 3rd Offense (Chronic Negligence): Loss of overnight take-home and day-use  privileges for the remainder of the school year or semester as determined by building administration.

Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad or laptop they have been issued by the school. iPads and laptops that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the school library for an evaluation of the equipment.

General Precautions

• Students are required to keep the iPad or laptop in the cover and sleeve provided by the school.

• The iPad and laptop are school property and all users will follow this agreement and the Central Community School Acceptable Use Policy.

• Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen—don’t use cleansers of any type.

• Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the iPad or laptop to prevent damage.

• iPads and laptops must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of the Central Community School District.

• Students are responsible for keeping their iPad or laptop secured at all times. Locks are available in the District Office.

• Students are responsible for their iPads or laptops both in and out of school, including extracurricular events. The costs associated with a lost, stolen or damaged iPad or laptop as stated in this Agreement apply to extracurricular events. It will not be the responsibility of the coach, bus driver, etc. to protect iPads and laptops during extracurricular activities.

• Students are responsible for keeping their iPad or laptop's battery charged for school each day.

• Students may not remove any Central Community School labels.

Carrying the iPad and Laptop

The protective device bag provided with the iPad and laptop has sufficient padding to protect the device from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the device. The guidelines below should be followed:

• iPads and laptops should always be within the protective case and a fully zipped bag when carried.

• Books, folders, pens, pencils and other items should be kept away from the iPad or laptop to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the iPad or laptop screen.

Screen Care

The iPad and laptop screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screen is particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.

• Do not lean on the top of the iPad or laptop when it is closed.

• Do not place anything near the iPad or laptop that could put pressure on the screen.

• Do not place anything in the sleeve that will press against the cover.

• Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.

• Do not “bump” the iPad or laptop against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc. as it will eventually break the screen.
