Gillian Lenth “View from a Hayride”
12 X 18, Watercolor, 2017
When I was on a trip with a friend I took a picture of the beautiful scenery from when we were on a hayride to remember the moment, but then I thought that it would be a fun project to do in art class so I already had my first project in mind when school started. The style I tried to give my drawing was a more realistic style, I really wanted to capture the beauty of the moment as accurate as possible. I didn’t really have any kind of symbolism when starting this project but I could say that maybe the happy and bright sunset could represent the way I was feeling at the time I took the picture. If I got the chance to start over I would definitely practice my water coloring skills to make things look a little smoother in the sky and grass area. I also wouldn’t have added so many cattails at the bottom, I don’t really like how they look down there. I do however really like how the sky and trees turned out, I never really used this media before so I didn’t really know what I’d expect at the end. It took me a while but I am really happy with the colors I used for the sunset as well, in my opinion it actually looks like a sunset which is what I was going for. I’m also happy with the subtle details that I added, I think it really brought my drawing to life more.
Gillian Lenth “Capturing the Moment”
18" X 24", Charcoal, 2017
When creating this drawing, I tried to make it more realistic so my style would be realism for this piece. Which I found out is really hard to pull off, especially when you have little experience at drawing people realistically. My drawing is very straight forward, so even if you look closely at it, it has no deep meaning. Some things that I would love to change about it if I started over, was to sketch some things out in pencil first instead of going straight to charcoal. I realized that charcoal is very hard to erase, and some of my erase lines are very noticeable. Another thing I would change would to maybe do the grid technique so that things are more proportionate, especially in the face. I do really like what I was able to pull off though. I’m really proud of my shading skills especially in the hands and arms. I also really love how my hands are turning out in general too, because they are so hard to draw for me usually.
Gillian Lenth “Print Making”
8.5” X 11”, Ink, 2017
My style yet again for my drawing is realism, I wanted to make my flowers and pot look as accurate as I could without making it too detailed, which wouldn't cooperate with the ink. That however, did end up happening though. If I could change anything about this, then I would go simpler with my drawing and definitely distribute the ink throughout the drawing better so that all can be seen. I would probably change what I drew too, I regret doing something so difficult. I do however love the color contrast from yellow and black, it’s really pretty and I like how it looks like its wearing. I also really liked how my sketch turned out too, sadly it didn’t transfer well.
