Gillian Lenth "German Castle"
12" x 18" Graphite on Paper, 2016
My drawing was based after an actual German castle called Neuschwanstein Castle. So I was going for of a more realistic style for my drawing because I thought I would try something new because I have never really tried a more detailed, realistic drawing before. I wouldn’t really say there was anything really iconic in the castle, but a thing this castle was known for was the fact that it was on a hill surrounded by trees and far away from the noisiness of the city’s. So I made sure to try and add that peacefulness in my drawing by adding things like the trees and the valley behind the castle. Some things I would change if I could start over would be that I wouldn’t have zoomed up so close to that castle so that I could fit the whole building in, and add more of the trees and hill that it is on. I honestly do like how it turned out though. I like the shading that I did, as well as the details that I added. I think the shading really brought the piece together. I think for drawing semi-realistic clouds for the first time, I did a good job making them look fluffy and accurate.
Gillian Lenth "Old Camera Print"
8.5" x 11", Ink on Paper, 2016
I drew the camera from directly looking at, then sketching what I saw. So the style I was trying to make it for realistic so that I could really bring out the features of the old camera. I really chose the the camera when doing the print because the prints reminded me of how photographs look back then so I thought it would be cool to make the camera the photograph. I think if I could re-do this print the I would probably want to make the sketch better looking and simpler so that when I traced it over in the ink it would be so messed up. Which is also another thing I would want to redo, if I had time then I would have like to redo the tracing of the the ink part because you can see where I messed up at times. There are some things that I like about this print though. I really liked how the ink spread on the print, I really like how some spots are darker than others. It gets a cool feel to it, I think the fading of the ink made it old looking which is what I was sort of going for.
Gillian Lenth “Still Life Flower Vase”
(unfinished)
9 x 12, Colored Pencil, 2016
So my drawing was based after an actual picture that I took, so I tried to make it more on the side to really bring out the still life aspect. I didn’t really have anything that I would call symbolism in all honesty. If I could start over, I would have started the drawing a little sooner so that I could have finished coloring it in time because if you couldn’t notice, I didn’t finish it in time. I would also want to color the vase again, because I don’t think it looks that great right now. If I had more time I would have found a better tool for coloring it, like charcoal because I don’t think the colored pencil looked that great, especially with the pencil marks showing. A thing that I loved about it, is that I think I did a good job drawing the flowers to look realistic. I think I added nice detail to it.
