Emily Miller “Face Wear for they eyes/ The Eye Frames/Eye Wear”
7 inches wide 5 inches long 2 ½ inches tall, Cardboard & Acrylic Paints & Hot Glue, 2021
I had an idea to make glasses as life-size as possible but out of cardboard. I was going to use a layering technique at first by making the base shape and adding smaller and smaller flat pieces to round it out but instead, I used a wrapping technique and wrapped thin strips of cardboard around the base. Next, I added a few layers to the spots that were bare, then Painted the whole thing black. Next, I added gold to the bottom and middle of the lenses and little silver accents to the sides where the arms meet with the lenses. I learn a new technique for adding the cardboard than the ones that I learned in the videos. At first, the glasses were too bare just being black so I added the silver accents and gold lining. If I could start over I would try to make it look more sleek and smooth because it looks a little janky to me. Overall I love the whole thing. It turned out how I wanted it and I can even wear it on my face like real glasses.
Emily Miller “Potted Flower”
Wire, Dirt & Cardboard, 2021
The style of this project is more on the surreal side. Although you can look at it and tell it's a flower it's not realistic because flowers are not 2D with a 3D base, they also don't have the look that mine does. Mine looks almost like that basic flower everyone drew as a child. My first idea was to create a hot air balloon, so first I started creating the basket for it. After a couple of days, I became really sick so I was not able to finish it at school. After a while, I was able to work on it at home and I realized, I would not have enough time or wire to create the rest of the balloon. I didn't want to scrap everything and start over because this wire is already all bent up and won't snap back to normal so I had to use the basket how it was. I had an idea to make it into a plant while I was sitting on my couch working on this because I saw my mom’s plants right in front of me. After that, I got to work and lined the inside with cardboard so the dirt wouldn't spill out. Next, I attached a wire to the bottom of the basket for the stem of the flower and put some dirt into it. Next, I created the petals by making a little oval shape and twisting the ends. I made 8. Then I created a little spiral and added each pedal to the spiral. Then, I made the leaves on the flower the exact same as the pedals but smaller and attached them. Finally, I made little loop things to stick out of the dirt for decoration. They look like little weeds or plants. If I could start over I would probably use colored wire for the flower parts. So like green wires for the stem and leaves and many colorful wires for the pedals. I love that it actually has dirt in it like a real flower even though it's metal.
