Corey Dochterman "Obsession"

9x12, BLK/White & Color, 2022

My idea is essentially describing the Obsession some people have with their mobile devices; Now normally I don't mind it, but it's for those oblivious people in public or even in person, especially my own family members. My idea evolved over the course of creation, thinking about the Apple Logo as a regular heart for example.

Simply I outlined various things with a pencil such as the shade around the individual in the middle, then the ruler to help make the straight lines of a 'pedestrian' person down below. As for the darkness surrounding them, I used the white cloth to blend charcoal and a specific lead pencil together.

As for the meaning? It's all in the title. The image is to symbolize some of our obsessions with technology, and I'm completely guilty of this as well; The only pet peeve I really have with it is when I'm in a conversation and someone completely ignores me with their phone, particularly my family, and this is on a small scale.

The most difficult part honestly was trying to make the shading not too eccentric nor unrealistic, so I had to sort of.. 'shadow' it and blend it with the 'light' of the middle, as well as the text bubble above. I would probably fix and edit the apple in the middle, or the little bubbles leading up to the primary bubble above.

I'd say.. Abstract. It is simplified down to the bare bones without any unnecessary things on the outside to distract you from the point or 'objective' of the piece. Personally, there's one specific thing I enjoy drawing, I'll be honest–but what I really do love about it is the heart and the middle, as well as the simplicity of the image itself, describing the simple problem we all occasionally share.

Corey Dochterman "Meyer's Shading Practice"

9x12, BLK/White - Pencil, 2022

For context, this was one of the first sketches/practices we did with Ms. Meyer, which involved shading, as well as darkness and lightness.

Simply, as far as tools go, it was a mish-mash of graphite pencil, charcoal, and a cloth to blend, as well as leave the 'bright light' spot on the sphere and such.

The only difficulty, if any, was trying to 'perfect' the shapes and such, as well as how dark I wanted the actual shadows and such- and where the light would come from and render throughout the shape.

If I had to change something, it would most likely be the darkness of the shadow underneath the spherical object; It is fitting already, but I'd make it just a tad bit lighter, possibly.

There isn't much to say about this practice, but to me it was a sort of.. test to help us draw from memory, which many experienced Artists do until they have it down, or various others like me will use reference pictures.

Pencil was used, not much else to it. The difficulty was really just.. trying to get the shapes of the object down, as well as an alternate angle, which both were weighed upon by the fact I couldn't see the object itself.

The only change - if any - would be possibly the alternate angle on the left, and/or the way I drew the 'toy' in and of itself.

One of my personal favorites, this artwork was simple a 'realism check' as I like to call them sometimes, or just a replication of my reality- which I enjoy doing very much. Simply, this was a picture of my torso and partially my arms, more of which I'll get into here soon.

Pencil, various graphite and charcoal tools to get different levels of darkness; Cloth to blend, and even my own fingers to add little bits of fun 'design' to the background– this was originally an accident on the left and right.

There isn't much to think about- at least in my opinion; Truly, the only thing I could really think about is.. each and every single one of our days, we're all peers and students and go through the same grind almost every day; Whether good or bad to some, we're all the same, and can all relate to this.

The most difficult had to be the bottom-left part of the bag, trying not to make all of the parts too similar in black color to the point they'd blend together, it was quite difficult actually- because our computer bags have mainly one color throughout. One thing I'd certainly change, albeit small, would be an attempt to outline parts of the bag down there to help outline the different parts so they wouldn't blend more successfully.
