Welcome to Dreambox Math!
Our district uses Dreambox Math to help support and deepen your child's math skills. Here is a quick overview of what Dreambox is, how we use it, and how you can support your child at home.
What is Dreambox?
DreamBox Math is an interactive, online math program that helps students build deep mathematical understanding through visual models and problem-solving. Rather than relying on simple memorization or repetitive worksheets, DreamBox uses engaging, hands-on digital tools—like virtual counters and number lines—to help children make sense of math concepts.
How We Use It in the Classroom
Dreambox serves as a supplemental tool alongside our core math curriculum. It gives students additional time to explore, practice, and solidify the math concepts we are learning in class. We use it during small-group instruction or during dedicated independent practice time.
How It Responds to Your Child (Intelligent Adaptivity)
Every child learns at their own pace, and Dreambox is build to adapt to each student:
Meets Them Where They Are: Dreambox tracks how your child solves problems - not just whether their answers are right or wrong. It then immediately adjusts the difficulty, pacing, and hints provided.
Personalized Learning: Whether your child needs extra support on a foundational skill or is ready from an advanced challenge, the program continuously tailors lessons to fit their exact needs.
The Golden Rule for Families: Please Do NOT Help with the Answers!
It can be tempting to jump in and give your child the correct answer or show them a specific strategy when they get stuck. But the best way you can help is by letting them work through it on their own. Get the answer wrong and allow the program adjust accordingly to support your child.
Here is why:
It confuses the adaptive engine. If an adult helps solve a problem, Dreambox assumes that student has mastered that concept independently and will give them harder lessons. This can quickly lead to frustration when the child has to work without assistance.
Productive Struggle build confidence. Dreambox includes built-in hints and visual scaffolding to guide students when they struggle. Working through a challenge helps them build true conceptual understanding and confidence.
How You CAN Help at Home
Encourage Effort: Remind your child that making mistakes is a normal, helpful part of learning.
Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of giving answers, ask: "What tools on the screen can you try using?" or " What do the in-lesson hints say?"
Skip the Paper and Pencil: Dreambox is designed for students to think conceptually using the visual tools on the screen. Encourage them to solve problems directly inside the program rather than using standard pencil-and-paper procedures.
