The core component of the AVID Program is the AVID Elective Class, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes such as AP and Honors courses. Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing, and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture, providing the support needed to excel in the advanced course they would normally shy away from.
The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by qualified tutors, which provides deeper support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about vocational trades, colleges, and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities, and college admission requirement information.
AVID recruits students who are motivated to do well and who are serious about their academic future. Students who are willing to challenge themselves by adding at least one advanced course to their schedule that the AVID class can support them. The AVID Elective seeks out "first-generation" college students to help provide the roadmap in preparing for that first year of college and beyond. The AVID program will also analyze data to locate students in the academic middle, who generally have between a 2.0 to 3.5 GPA, and support them in taking advanced coursework, preventing them from falling through the academic cracks.
AVID has been quoted by teachers and students, as a program that, "helps students learn how to learn" by providing multiple research-based based strategies to help students retain difficult concepts.
