Upholding the life-on-life spirit, we join hands with parents to nurture our next generation to appreciate modesty, to pursue excellence, to have a spirit of dedication and to be courageous in accepting responsibilities.
Our Values
Every child has dignity
Every child is able to learn
Every child is able to succeed
Our school’s innovation focus revolves around the theme of making student thinking visible. In Year 3 of the EIE project, we split into two teams to further explore how teachers can be empowered in a whole-school approach and the effectiveness of student learning.
Innovation Team 1 is focusing on how to empower teachers to try out and apply Thinking Routines in a whole-school approach. Since the introduction of Thinking Routines to teachers at our school, we introduced TfU and Thinking Routines (TR) to teachers in a staff development programme in August 2021. Another session on Thinking routines was conducted in the Learning Community Task Force (LC) to help panel heads gain a better understanding on what TRs are and how we could use them in lessons to deepen students’ thinking. Throughout the year, some of them tried out in their lessons, especially EIE members and their KLAs.
However, from the feedback of teachers in the LC Task Force, we find diversity in the application of Thinking Routines not only among individual teachers, but also Key Learning Areas (e.g. while some are struggling with what thinking routines are, others want to learn more on top of the core ones). We are not sure about the status or progress of teachers in terms of their application of Thinking Routines.
Innovation Team 2 is working on how students can make their learning visible to support and reveal the depth and complexity of their learning by five core principles (purposeful, social, emotional, empowering and representational) of learning in FKYC. As the second project of our innovation, it is expected to take place after the teacher is equipped with the certain knowledge in the first project. We believe that the five core principles with group learning and documentation form a powerful and integrated approach to making learning and learners visible.
Introduction of School & Innovation Project
The FKYC Teacher Cohort provided context about the schools' 10+ years journey in Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). The school is currently exploring SRL Pro, which integrates the most relevant ideas & best practices from their various professional learning engagements (including EIE), to further promote students' learning and deeper thinking.
Learning & Teaching (Co-Planning) Session: English Language
EIE participants joined the English department’s Learning & Teaching session, where English teachers across forms/grades meet to exchange lesson designs and gain feedback from each other in order to refine lesson plans. EIE participants worked with the English teachers in small groups to identify what & where different Project Zero thinking routines could be added into the draft lesson plans. EIE participants got a taste of the trust, open-mindedness, and respect between FKYC colleagues in enhancing each other's teaching. Ultimately, FKYC runs a panel co-planning session every teaching cycle in order to enhance students' learning via the SRL Pro approach.
In addition to the English L&T session, FKYC Teacher Cohort members from Maths and Chinese History shared their latest innovation work and insights.
Lesson Observation (S4 English) and Post-lesson Conference
EIE participants then observed a S4 English lesson which incorporated the use of different thinking routines to engage students' deeper thinking. After the lesson observation, FKYC Teacher Cohort members and EIE participants discussed and debriefed on what they saw and heard. Participants felt a high degree of energy in the classroom and appreciated the many opportunities that the teacher created for students to demonstrate their thoughts and understanding.
Campus Tour
To wrap up the day, Student Ambassadors from S2-5 guided EIE participants on a campus tour, introduced the different facilities available, and shared their experiences and perspectives as a FKYC student.
Visitors' Learnings
"The event was hugely inspiring! It really helped to see a school context similar to my own, successfully adopting a school-wide approach (an aim for our school). It has helped me reflect on what I might do next year to continue creating opportunities for dialogue as well as encourage greater consistency in strategies and shared goals."
"I used to think thinking routines only have incidental application, now I think they can be systemically applied."
"I used to think students aren't very engaged or active in Form 4, now I know it depends on how they are trained."
Visitors' Next Steps
"I used to think that the very structured and standardised school-wide lesson plan would be very restrictive and limiting, but now I understand that it's more a general approach to classroom practices that help all teachers better facilitate learning, and there is still room for teacher creativity and autonomy. I still think consistency in resources is incredibly helpful in easing teacher's workload and ensuring a good standard across classrooms, but I wonder how our teachers would feel about creating learning guides."
"I used to think it is difficult to use a whole school approach to implement thinking routines, now I found FKYC can succeed because teachers are open-minded. Now I would like to try it out in my school."
FKYC Teacher Cohort: "We received genuine feedback from participants on the English Language Learning & Teaching session and the English Language lesson they observed. We are inspired by their questions about how students perceive the use of thinking routines in making student thinking visible. They have provoked us to dig deeper in our future planning to address teachers' needs."
