Our school is founded on the ideals of Christian education, and we strive to nurture our students in all aspects of their development, including moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic, and spiritual growth. Our goal is for our students to mature into individuals who reflect Christ’s perfect character, to cultivate a mindset of service, and to contribute to building a strong and vibrant community.
The CYMCAC EIE Open House centres its inquiry focus on “Learning through reading”. This year, we have introduced reading tasks to students in different subjects (e.g. Chinese Language, Biology, History & ICT) and enhanced students’ deeper thinking by practising Thinking Routines “See Think Me We” and “See Think Wonder”. In the long term, we hope students can be self-directed learners who engage in deeper thinking and embrace curiosity about the world.
Overview of CYMCAC
We highlighted our school’s background and emphasized its unique feature of promoting ICT education. Specifically, we explained that “Computer Literacy” is a mandatory subject for junior students. Besides, senior students, regardless of their chosen elective subjects in science or art, have the option and capacity to select “Information and Communication Technology” as an elective for their DSE public exams. This is made possible through our careful and thoughtful subject selection categorization.
Furthermore, we shared our team’s innovation focus on “Learning through reading” and expressed our aspiration for students to become self-directed learners who can cultivate curiosity between what they learn and the world around them.
Classroom Observation & Discussion - S5 Chinese lesson
During class, the students studied an article about “Amah Rock”, and our cohort member, Kimmy, applied Thinking Routine “See Think Wonder” with students to stimulate their thinking. Kimmy also encouraged the students to connect the article with their daily lives.
Following the lesson, we held a discussion with the guests about the application of virtual reality (VR) technology to enhance students’ visual experience and expand their sense of wonder.
We also aimed to promote cross-disciplinary learning among our students, as demonstrated by their recent excursion to Victoria Peak. We integrated Chinese writing tasks into this outing experience.
Classroom Observation & Discussion - S1 Integrated Science
In Miss Pang (Yui)’s S1 integrated science lesson, a hands-on experiment was designed where students were required to read a brief science journal prior to class. During the lesson, students worked in groups to conduct experiments that involved using iPads to capture the motion of a table tennis ball dropped from a specific height. Our aim was to make learning enjoyable and to encourage curiosity among the students, and students could also learn to use technology not only for leisure but also for learning.
Campus Tour
We have also given our guests a tour of our campus. For instance, we have a gym that caters to the needs of our physical education students, and there is also a rooftop area where students can skateboard.
Agree with the belief that learning should not be confined to preparing for public exams. It should focus on developing students’ thinking skills.
Appreciate that the team has established a common focus and has made various attempts in their own classrooms to achieve the shared goal of promoting learning through reading.
We are glad to have held an Open House to enhance our guests’ understanding of our school's vision and to showcase how we implement our plans with a focus on cross-curricular collaboration in ICT, History, Biology, and Chinese subjects. During conversations with the EIE cohort and CEL, we explained our approach and discussed how we overcame challenges during the implementation process.
During the lesson observations on the day, we were also pleased to see that our students were attentive and engaged in deeper learning through the use of Thinking Routines such as “See Think Me We” and “See Think Wonder” across various subjects. We believe that Thinking Routines are beneficial to learning effectiveness and help cultivate students to become active and independent learners. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to share this experience with our guests.
As we move forward, we are planning to conduct regular professional development sessions to share our learnings and innovation focus with our colleagues in the upcoming academic year. We also welcome more collaboration with different subjects to enhance student engagement and autonomy.
