Co-curricular and Community Service Opportunities 

Whether your high school student needs volunteer hours for school or simply wants a productive way to spend their time, here are some ideas for how they can get involved in the community.

Bermuda Zoological Society

Kids 14 and up can become junior volunteers for BZS in a variety of different areas. Volunteer opportunities are available in the Aquarium, administration, education, library, turtle-scrubbing, special events, and more. Volunteers are asked to commit to six months at a time. Apply online here or submit a Volunteer Application form by hand to the BZS Volunteer Office.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful

Sign up for an organized community clean-up event through Keep Bermuda Beautiful. Every month the KBB tackles a different area and requires volunteers to make it a success. They provide trash and recycling bags, disposable gloves and litter grabbers. Sign up here.

SPCA

If your teen loves animals and they’re at least 14 years old, they can volunteer at the SPCA. Junior volunteers assist with animal care, cleaning and tidying kennels, assisting with laundry, and spend time with the animals. Volunteers are asked to commit regular hours where possible. Windreach

Windreach welcomes younger volunteers to take part in therapy animal chores such as feeding, grooming and socialization, organic waste management, garden maintenance, and woodland nature trail maintenance. Teens ages 15 and older may volunteer on an individual basis, while those 14 years and younger must have a parent or guardian accompany them. BDA Cleanup

The brainchild of a teenage Bermudian, BDA Cleanup seeks to utilize microvolunteering as a way to clean up the island, which means your teen can volunteer any time that is convenient, whether it’s for a few minutes or a few hours, rather than through a large, organized event on a specific date. Bermuda National Trust

If your teen enjoys visiting historic areas or the great outdoors, they might consider volunteering with the BNT’s AIM programme. There are a wide range of options including everything from clearing invasive species in nature reserves or helping at events to freshening up paint in historic buildings or being a camp counselor. Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation

If your teen is the creative type and at least 14 years old, they can apply to be a student volunteer at Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation to assist teachers in the classrooms for classes and camps. Many volunteers have had the opportunity to stay on after their volunteer time as paid assistants, and some have even gone on to become teachers.
