Skyler Whipple "Cat"
8x10, Paint, 2024
My idea was just having a cat. I got this idea from looking at a photo of my cat in my phone. So I first painting the background a nice bold yellow color with a large brush. After I began to trace the body of the cat following with the tracing of the facial features of it. Then I began to paint the smaller details like the nose and eyes. The nose has two different colors to give it more of a realistic look. I also painting a nice black line around some details to help give it a more defined look and so that it wouldn't blend into the fur. Then I started to add the fur, I couldnt really give it more volume (make it fluffy with detail) so I tried to mix some colors or streak some things but it just kind mixed the colors together. After I painting the whole body and face I added the inside of the ears. I used paint brushes, a cup of water, the thing that holds paint, a black tracing paper, and a pencil. There is no specific meaning to this as it is just a cat. Nothing is symbolic about it. What was most difficult to me was trying to blend to get the right colors. I either had to somehow fix it or just deal with it. I would honestly just change the colors up a bit if I could try again. I would say I tried to have it realistic but its hard to do that. I couldnt say what makes it unique to me. I like that I was able to shade a bit better then I used to.
Skyler Whipple "Cake""
8x8, Acrylic Paint, Pencil, 2024
My idea was a cake. Its a still life from a cake I made a few months back. The photo I took was my only inspiration. First I painted the background a good light sand color as it wanted it to be white but I a different white from the actual cake. Then I began to traced my picture on the canvas with the powder paper and a pencil. After that I used a few reds to make the strawberries. Then I did the chocolate with two different browns to help resemble shading. I tried using some white to shading the top but it didnt work too well. Afterwards, I began on the bottom of the cake. I made a grey and then a darker grey to again, resemble shading. I then painted the actually cake holder a basic black color. Then I started on the whip cream. I reused the grays and used a pure white too. The shading was a bit hard but I got it down. Finally I painted the top of the cake a pure white. Then I ended with the chocolate chips using 3 different browns to bring out more shape and color to them. I used a multitude of tools and techniques such as; Paintbrushes, powder paper, pencil, and shading. There is no specific meaning to this artwork as this just a cake. I don't need my audience to think about anything and there is nothing symbolic about it. The most difficult thing about this was the shading. I made sure to try and make how the picture looks but use my head on how something maybe be darker then something else. If i could change anything I would remove the random white marks on the chocolate. I wanted this to be more of a realistic style. No idea how this is unique to me but I do love how realistic it looks. When you look close you can see some imperfections but when you few it from a bit of a distance it looks professional.
Skyler Whipple "The Girl"
6x8, Acrylic, 2024
This was from a picture my girlfriend took. I got the idea from her.
First I painted the background a nice grey color. Then I outlined her and with some tracing paper. After this I started on the outfit, it was easy as it was all black so there isn't any shading. Then I painted in the cross and the collar of the outfit. After this I began on the eyes and lips. Then I did the face. I tried shading with the neck and the nose but it was a little hard. I then did the hair and shaded a bit making the top darker then the bottom as the bottom is lighter. I then decided to fix some things and shaded the nose and recolored the lips. There is no specific meaning to it but all I want people to know is that this is my girlfriend. Its not exactly her but its still her. There is nothing symbolic about it. What was most difficult for me was definitely shading and coloring. I tried overcoming it with reshading things but it didn't work too well. If I could changed anything I would most likely change those colors and shading. This is suppose to be a realistic style. I dont know what really makes this unique to me.
