Skyler Whipple "The Tree"
9x12" Graphite on Paper, 2022
My idea is just a lonely dead tree that sits by some rock and rubble around it. I got this idea from me just drawing before dead trees I don't know how it started but it was the only thing I knew I could draw decently and it evolved as a simple trunk with branches that expand off each other and there was one time I sketched and the tree looked imperfect but more realistic to what a real tree would be like so I did that style instead. I have no inspirations for my tree. I started out my tracing my own sketch so I could maintain the shape I liked. I had to extend the branches though as this paper was bigger. After I did some renovations by erasing some confusing spaces so it would go with the background and you could see the branches clearer. Then i started lightly sketching a background and then i used a rag for blending and a blending stick to smooth it out. After I used a eraser and erased some clouds into the background too so it wouldn't look empty. I did the same process to the ground but instead of clouds I drew some lines from grass. I used a blender stick, blending rag, graphite pencil, and a eraser. There isn't any meaning to this really but thinking about it I could put some meaning into it by saying I feel as my imperfections came out as i drew the background but it looks good either way as trees always have imperfections in them which makes each tree unique. So even if it isn't perfect it doesn't mean it's bad. I want the audience to think that it's just a tree really but i feel like people could put a meaning to it if they tried hard enough. There's no symbolic imagery in this art piece. Nothing was ever very difficult for me but more time consuming as with the branches it was very easy though it took awhile. There was no struggles really to overcome. If I were to change something however I would make the ground lighter and fix my branches up even more. The art style I went for is realistic. I feel as this is unique because as i said before trees can always look different from another tree so even if someone were to try and copy me it would still have a bit of uniqueness because it wouldn't be exactly like mine. I really love how my clouds turned out and the trunk down to the ground as they like realistic to me.
Skyler Whipple "Bread of wonder"
8x10, Photoshop, 2022
My idea is to have a bread loaf be stuffed with different things so it goes in on itself. I got the idea why randomly brainstorming and things i've added are the eyes and teeth to have more interaction with it. No inspirations from other artwork or experiences. As i started I added a newspaper to give the collage feel to it. Most of this though is cutting out and adding as for the bread i cut out the whole inside so it could fit the berries. Once that was in I cut out holes where some berrie would be and place mushroom images in there. After that I added some eyes that would look at the bread and some teeth to add to the eyes so it would look like a creature or entity is looking at it. I used tools such as the eraser and copy and pasted images in there. This artwork doesn't mean anything really. I don't want to people to think to hard about this work either. There is no symbolism to this either. What do you want your audience to think about? Is there any symbolic imagery in the work? Most difficult would be perfecting the edges of the photos so it wouldn't be to cut off or would have to much. I really just took my time with this to make sure i wouldn't mess up. I don't really wanna change anything at all as its so odd that it wouldn't need anything. I would say that this art style would be abstract. I think the oddness really makes it unique as who else would think about putting berries in bread the mushrooms in berries. I love the abstracness about it.
