Skyler Whipple "The Bell"

8x12x6, Stoneware & Glaze, 2023

My idea is a bell. I got this idea by looking at different molds until i thought this would be unique. I have no inspirations from another artwork. First I had to choose my mold which i chose the bell. I didn't do this part but someone made a peanut butter like consistency of clay to pour into the molds. Mine was poured in then I had to wait for it to dry. Sometime while it was drying I hallowed out the inside and cleaned it up so it wouldn't explode. After it was dried enough, I told it out and cleaned up the actual bell itself. Then it was baked and sanded down. I wanted a realistic bell color so I put glazes that would look like an old iron. It was then baked again and it was done. I used molding as a technique and rib, needle, sponge for my tools This artwork has no meaning as it is just a bell. I want the audience just to think of it as a bell and that's all. There isn't any symbolic imagery. What was most difficult was probably trying to carve the inside as it was very hard trying to know when I was close to the edge or not.I overcame it but making sure to take it slow and smooth so I wouldn't break it. I would try and make the bell look less broken if I could start over. I would say that this art style would be realism. I would say this is unique as I axcedently messed up the mold a bit but it actually worked out as it gave the bell a ruined look or aged look. That is what I love about it as it really make it look more realistic

Skyler Whipple "Abomination"

14X8x18", Stoneware and Glaze, 2023

It was a medieval knight. I got this idea from a little bit and then had some inspirations from images. It evolved as I had the thought in my head what I wanted and then drawing to design in didn't go too well with a mix of less time and tearing it apart to take out the inside. I had no inspirations from life experiences or other works. First I had made the structure by taping together cans and a water bottle with a lot of tape. Then I constructed a head with newspaper and tape. Once those were done I made coils to wrap around the structure. I would then smooth it out and after that add details. I carved out the eyes and stuck a nose onto it. I added a bump at the top to give it a bit more detail as it was kinda bland. It was then tore open to take out the inside. I would then repair it and let it dry. Finally i would sand it down and glaze it which was fired. I used the needle, rib, and sponge.  This artwork doesn't have any specific meaning to it. The audience doesn't need to think about too much either as it isn't the best piece of artwork ever. There is not any symbolic imagery in this work. To be honest making the actual structure to put the clay around as the items with the structure were hard to work with. I didn't really overcome the struggle with anything specific but I made sure to take my time so it wouldn't fall apart. I would change the shape of the head as it was too round. I would say that this is more abstract. It is unique to me due to its imperfections. I don't like anything about this artwork.

"The Snowman Construction"

Soft Clay & Imovie, 2023

It is a windy snowing day. Some snow balls start to roll onto each other. Then a snowball with coal eyes and a mouth start to go on top. After that, a carrot starts to shimmy its way to the snow balls to the face to make a nose. Two sticks start to roll their way to the snowman. They then start to stick onto the sides to make arms. It comes to life and starts looking around. Finally the snowman waves at the camera as a goodbye.
